I wonder how many FTV channels are now left? I.E. ones you still need a Sky box and card to receive as they're free on FreeSatFromSky only?

I assume a significant number of HD ones, but in terms of the basic line-up of the channels people actually want to watch, Freesat is really looking like a complete service now.

Although something like C5 has gone to freesat and FTA there's still 2 other C5's on Astra2 that are both FTV

Still running down their encryption contract, I would suspect. channel 4 was the same when Freesat first launched.

Chris

I think it may depend on your box. If you want to make certain, go into your menu and look for setting ... there will be a setup or re-scan option there somewhere. If you run it it will go through all available channels and add as necessary.

Will C5 HD end up on Freesat ?

Chris
06-12-2011, 21:29
I think it's inevitable that one day all the terrestrial channels will have Freesat HD equivalents, if only because eventually the SD broadcasts will get switched off.

For the time being, however, Sky has been very busy signing broadcasters up for encryption contracts over the years and it will take time to unravel.

Didn't realise C5 regionalised its advertising. Presumably we were just getting a homogenized national feed previously.

It's good to see Astra 1N being put to good use so quickly. It bodes well for an increase in FTA HD channels in the not-too-distant.

Aha ... That makes more sense :D

---------- Post added at 22:03 ---------- Previous post was at 22:01 ----------

I'm wondering whether they are unveiling a box as such, or simply announcing the service. in principle, many of the Freesat PVRs already on the market ought to be able to receive a software upgrade allowing them to run Netflix in the same way as they got iPlayer and (coming soon, apparently) ITV Player.

I've a sneaky suspicion it could be a new service with new boxes to follow , but that's purely guesswork.

This doesn't effect Virginmedia or Sky. Freesat customers were NEVER going to have Virginmedia installed and very unlikely to get Sky installed.

But its a fantastic addition to Freesat as you can dip in and out of it without subscription. Something that will go down well with Freesat customers.

There has been talk for quite some time about a second generation Freesat spec. There was speculation for a while that they were waiting to get Youview onto it but that seems to have fallen by the wayside now.

I've just bought a Battlestar Echostar PVR; it's a good thing I'm not interested in paying extra for TV services or else I might be quite peeved at being shut out of part of the service less than a fortnight later. :D

Still, as Telly says, in a roundabout way this is very much in keeping with the ethos of Freesat. The TV is still free, but it offers Freesat STB owners access to video rentals, 21st century style, if they want it, without any contract obligation, just the way it always used to be at the local shop.

We will have to wait & see. I don't fancy having to pay for another box.

You won't have to pay for a new box. Your Freesat service will continue to work just fine for as long as your current box lives - it's just the additional services that will need a new box. But if you're happy with what you have (and I certainly am, I got my very first Freesat PVR only a couple of weeks ago), then there's nothing to worry about.

It all looks good but like others don`t fancy having to fork out for a new box. Would love them to add sky sports on a pay platform then I would dump sky and buy a new box. Was waiting for Real Digital tv to launch sky sports as promised but that hasn`t happened yet. They have gone very quiet. Did email them and after a long wait I got a reply saying they were still in business and would be adding pay tv to their line up soon. Some how I don`t think that will ever happen as Freesat have too much of a stronghold on the satalite free tv

Chris

BBC One Scotland HD launched today on Freesat. No retune should be necessary - it should just take over EPG channel 108. BBC One HD will no longer be visible in the EPG for Freesat viewers who have their box set up with a Scottish postcode (I.e. not even up in the 900s with the SD regional variants).

BBC One Wales HD is 'coming soon' but there is no news on full regionalisation for England as yet - for the time being they will continue to get the standard all-England feed.

Important note, however, if you have reminders or scheduled recordings set, double check that they still work. Mine are not displaying correctly in my schedule menu and my EPG (Echostar HDS 600RS), although the recordings do actually seem to be still happening when they should. I may play safe and just delete and reset them.

21-06-2013, 07:52
They keep insisting they're not going FTA with Dave on Freesat. Welcome to the world of the exclusive satellite deals. Sky has it sewn up, for now at least.

I think it's possible they will move in the future, but until the last few months, spot beam capacity for UK-only broadcast was quite hard to come by so moving would have been impossible, given that they show so much repeat material that they will have UK-only rights for. Encryption was the only way to ensure their satellite broadcasts adhered to the rights they have bought.

The next time their encryption deal with Sky comes up for renewal, who knows.

BBC News and BBC Sport apps launch on Freesat.

http://www.freesat.co.uk/about-freesat/whats-new

Freesat, the subscription free satellite TV service, has today announced the launch of the new BBC News app and BBC Sport app on its Freetime service – the only free TV platform or service to feature these. The two new BBC-branded apps will have a similar look and feel to the BBC’s current online and connected TV apps, and greatly expands the amount of specialist news and sports video programming available.

Chris
25-03-2014, 08:27
The BBC have moved their HD channels into the 'main' EPG slot for each channel, with a few confusing exceptions applying to BBC One and BBC Two where there is not yet a complete replication of all national and regional variations in both SD and HD.

I'm assuming this does not apply to SD boxes.

So:
BBC One Wales/Scotland/NI HD 101 (but not England, where BBC One HD remains on 108 and the correct regional variation remains at 101 in SD)
BBC Two HD 102 (but not in Wales/Scotland/NI, where BBC Two HD remains on 109 and the correct regional version of the channel remains in SD on 102)
BBC Three HD 106
BBC Four HD 107
CBeebies HD 600
CBBC HD 601

BBC News HD is on 200 nationwide.

Edit

I have altered the information above. It appears that BBC One HD is still on 108 in England, due to the lack of HD regional variations. It is BBC One Wales, Scotland and NI HD that have moved to 101 for viewers in those areas.

That's the same logic that has moved BBC Two HD to 102 in England, but not in the Nations, because there are no HD variants available for Wales, Scotland and NI. In these areas, the correct variation remains on 102 in SD while the single national BBC Two HD variation is on 109.

BBC1 HD variants are listed down the bottom of the guide...

972 - BBC1 England HD
973 - BBC1 Scotland HD
976 - BBC1 Wales HD
978 - BBC1 NI HD

Chris
25-03-2014, 15:42
Yep - and it's the fact that there is just one all-England version of BBC One HD that is preventing Freesat users in England from getting an HD channel in EPG slot 101. Until the BBC can provide the correct regional variations for BBC One in London, Northwest, North, etc etc etc then there will be no change.

For the same reason, here in Scotland we are denied BBC Two HD in EPG slot 102. BBC Two Scotland in SD remains at 102 and BBC Two HD, which is a single London-controlled version of the channel with no English regional opt outs, is on 109.

To be honest I'd welcome the London version of BBC Two HD in slot 102 here in Scotland. Most of the opt-out programming on BBC Two Scotland is crud beyond words. Newsnight Scotland has to be seen to be believed.
