View Full Version : 30M Jitter making it impossible to game... Any help?

Hi guys,

Have had Virgin 30MB for just over a month and its been great. Even with the Superhub I have had a stable connection and been able to play game/download etc no problem.

At the weekend I started getting really bad jitter issues and packet loss. Ping Test gives me the following. On all occasions I let it find the best server (interestingly it used Dublin once...)

Best Result (seems to be a one off)
http://www.pingtest.net/result/40142553.png (http://www.pingtest.net)

Test 2
http://www.pingtest.net/result/40142434.png (http://www.pingtest.net)

Test 3
http://www.pingtest.net/result/40142371.png (http://www.pingtest.net)

I am in the EH5 area - is there anything wrong with the service that could be affecting me?

Cheers

could be a peering problem between you and manchester, try doing a pingtest to a server besides manchester. are you on 3mb upload or 1mb?

---------- Post added at 19:57 ---------- Previous post was at 19:56 ----------

interestingly it used Dublin once...

i think one of the dublin pingtest servers uses a VM connection, as my pings are always lower to that server, and the manchester one

Hey results from some manual tests below

http://www.pingtest.net/result/40143689.png (http://www.pingtest.net)

Maidenhead and Galway are showing issues with their server so no results from there.

Its really affecting gaming - jumping intermittently and general issues that seem like lag - but it can't be as my ping in game is steady around 90 - 150ms

Hi Pr3sario,

If you haven't done already turn everything off in your services barring multicast..

This should sort you connections out for games.. this did the trick for me ;-)

it will be the p2p management causing the jumps, at a guess black ops on xbox? no? well it will be another game that uses a p2p hosting system

Can I ask exactly what services you stopped as I have exactly the same problem here.

BC2 on the pc and constantly getting kicked for lag and packet loss.

It's only started happening this past week or so but i find its worse at night.

you have to remember there is congestion at peak time, this can cause your pings to rise, and cause more jitter

you also have to remember the p2p management system which is causing problems with people getting kicked out of games

Thanks, ive just been doing some reading up and didn't realise about the new p2p management.

I hope they sort it soon as its getting annoying now.

Dunno about anyone else but this is getting ridiculous now.

I've not managed one game this past two weeks without getting kicked for missing packets.

Having looked on the virgin support forum its chocka block with thousands of the same complaint and yet still virgin aint listening.

I hope beardy branson enjoys his millions of pounds as he's gonna need them for body guards to stop me ripping his head off.

I have yes and it was shocking little bursts of packet loss all over.

https://www.cableforum.co.uk/images/local/2011/05/93.png

Out of curiousity I just connected to my neighbours wifi (with permission) as he has 20mb virgin whereas i only have 10mb. And by way of a suprise not one kick from bfbc2 with packet loss, whereas on my connection im kicked every 5 mins. But looking at modem signal levels, etc mine are pretty much the same to his.

Maybe virmin are doing it deliberately to 10mb connection so people upgrade? I doubt it but i wouldn't put it past em.

Ive had it for 10 days now

between approx 5pm and 11pm the connection isnt even usable for web browsing let alone gaming.

I'm on 20mbit. I've had official responses from VM staff telling me there is no problem at my exchange, there is no utilisation issues.

I honestly dont think they havea clue what they are doing anymore.
The irony is that i cant get ADSL more than 5mbit as im between the 2 local exchanges.

I love virgn media when it is working but when it isnt its just shocking..

My signal levels are almost spot on flawless - the green box is outside my house. flawless for months then bam useless not even slightly incrimental just bam 10%-20% packetloss and pings upto 300 with 300 jitter.... then come midnight its back to normal - i have been monitoring it for days now using the speedtest tool...

its truley *****

Im going to call them tommrow and try and get an upgrade to 30 or 50 mbit and get off of the profile im on now....

I cant describe how frustrating it is when all i want to do is fire up my PC and relax playing some FPS... and its impossible.

Er yeah, wouldn't hold your breath... P2P apps are getting smarter with better encryption and obfuscation all the time, and the only response ISPs can make is to make the throttling more aggressive.

Well, they could upgrade their networks to cope, but let's try to keep this serious.

I'm having problems with Team Fortress 2 on the PC since having new modem and router from VM. When I refresh server list I get nothing. When you say turn off everything in your services how do you do that? Are you talking about modem settings / router setting?

When I refresh the server list i get "no internet games responded to that query".

We as consumers could stop expecting to be able to download tons of other people's IP for a few quid a month too and either pay more or stop copying but let's try to keep this serious.

people pay what the price is on offer, VM are free to jack up the price if thats whats needed to invest in the needed capacity. VM are also free to apply a usage limit.

Ignitionnet
22-05-2011, 12:48
Then people go elsewhere - frees up capacity but not conducive to longer term health of company.

We've had this discussion before though I'm quite sure. Note O2's loss of customers due to relatively modest price increase in the last quarter.

Chrysalis
22-05-2011, 12:52
the company remains healthy if profit margins go up, ultimately profit is the important figure not customer numbers. The broadband market seems to have lost touch with the basic principles of doing business with some isp's happy to make a loss as long as they have customers.

It is only a guess people would leave en masse with higher prices, most likely they would moan and groan and mostly stay put, a few would leave but it would be made up by a higher profit margin from other customers.

Hugh
22-05-2011, 14:05
But a risky guess if the company gets it wrong.

Turnover is vanity, profit is sanity.

Hi Bud..

Log onto your superhub!! Advance settings.. select services on the left pane underneath Content Filtering.. un select all apart from multicast... apply the changes at the bottom..

I believe router will reboot

Job Done ;)

I had loads of probs with games untill I did this :)

Its probably IP flood detection kicking in if your having issues refreshing server browsers as they do tend to trigger a flood of packets. Some routers also cannot handle the volume of packets coming through.

What can I do then. I have a separate modem and a Netgear router from VM. Don't have a superhub so do I change settings in the router? I've read somewhere on Steam that the router can get clogged.

TheCrow

I wouldn't worry superhub, I have the same setup as you with a modem and router.

I tried just the modem straight into pc by ethernet, no modem, no firewall nothing, and i still had the problem. I guess its time to wait for BT inifinity to come to my area as Virgin have become a joke for online gaming.

Pretty silly move on their part considering all the xbox and playstation users are having similar problems.

I do find that if I leave the game alone for 5-10 minutes eventually I get my fav servers up and I can play. Consolation I suppose.

Got this reply from someone on the TF2 forum.

Sorry for late reply, but I experienced what you do right after I got a Netgear router. So I think it is something to do with Netgear routers, I got no solution for it though. But I think it has to do with the router blocking since it is so many requests or something from loading that serverlist. Maybe I am wrong though.

Sorry thought you had superhub

If you have just got this router and having problems.. You need to fwd all the ports for TF2 to your LAN IP game rig..

Also check Qos or your router.. you could set that up for your games aswell..

What router model you have ?? Had alot of Netgears myself;)

I have a WGR614v9. How do you do the above.

I had one of those.. ;)

here ya go..

http://portforward.com/english/routers/port_forwarding/Netgear/WGR614v9/Team_Fortress_2.htm

Follow that.. server ip address will be your game rig.. if your unsure on your address go to start / run.. type cmd press enter

In the dos screen type ipconfig and press enter

note your IPv4 address... you need to be forwarding all those ports to this address in your router

Unsure if Qos is on that router so we shall leave that..

FYI..

That site is a great tool for finding ports you need to open for games on a specific router..
if you go to the main site you first choose your router.. and then select the game from the BIG list...it shows you how to set them up ;)

1 more thing to remember.. the address your assigning those ports to will always be for that address... so if you have more than 1 computer laptop ect on your network you should reserve this address to your mac.. other wise 1 of your other computers will get that address from the routers dhcp if powered on before yours..

This should help..

http://documentation.netgear.com/wgr614v9/enu/202-10308-01/WGR614v9-06-06.html

you need to be in the LAN Setup section on the left for reservation

Hope you get sorted bud ;)
