@ TJS - Nice to see someone is happy. I can't honestly say the same, mostly not bad, but it does have it's moments, especially in these recent months......

the story is the same for near enough everyone, like the post above, great speeds, but crappy ping and jitter. The OP is a lucky one, as that is a very low ping and 1ms jitter

mine is still ok off peak but dont know how long for, it seems whenever capacity gets upgraded utilisation never settles down on VM, constantly going up with their sell sell sell.

To be perfectly honest, and give Virgin their dues, for years with NTL and then Virgin, the connection was great. It wasn't until I 'upgraded' to 30MB that it all went wrong. Now, not to start another argument, I believe the S'Hub to be the cause of it all, but that is now in the past, as it was sorted by the CEO Office. I can't praise them high enough, and were very polite and efficient in dealing with my issues. I guess being a long standing customer has it's advantages

i was a VM customer for about a month when they sent my modem out
speed.io speedtest isn;t mentioned on here very often but seems to be quite acurate for 50 mb not sure about 100 mb though :)

that speed.io seems dodgy to me, it always adds a bit more to the speed, im not sure whether its calculating overheads, but any other speed test never gives me 5mb upload, 4.7 at max
https://www.cableforum.co.uk/images/local/2011/04/13.png (http://www.speedtest.net/)
For years where i live i've always has a solid connection but browsing is very slow tonight so i did a speed check and i'm not surprised browsing was slow just look at that it's not even 1Mb. It's either VM doing something or everyone being online over the holiday period.

4.7 is the max you will get due to no allowance for overheads as there used to be when it was 1.5 up.

i meant the test on speed.io always shows as 5000kb, where as anywhere else it shows as 4.7mb

I see my VM connection had another oversubscription fit whilst I not using it. I am missing them all as I want to run a speedtest during it to see if throughput gets affected.

I know, I was just explaining why. The 1.5 up was actually provisioned at 1.75 on the modem to allow for the overheads so that speedtest site would show the full 1.5 advertised.
For some reason 50Mb no longer has this for the upgraded upload speed although 30Mb has.

the upload on 50mb is set at 5.14mb so it has some room, but not much, the 3mb upload speed on the 30meg package seems to be set way up (i dont know the exact figure) ut speed test show the upload speed to be like 3mb to 3.3mb wheras 50mb upload speed advertised at 5mb always test at 4.6 to 4.8mb and the 100/10 package is further away still testing at 8 to 9 meg!

Try another server, the manchester one is appalling at the moment,

for manchester
https://www.cableforum.co.uk/images/local/2011/04/8.png
for birmingham.
I think the manchester server has been having issues for the last few days, as on pingtest.net it also shows 2% packet loss a lot of the time, exact same figure with my friend who is on sky broadband

I know the results were taken a few days ago but it was to show that hte manchester server is intermittant :)

birmingham is also shaky I have seen it slow down during office hours (I presume that connection is busy on office hours), the only one that is really reliable is london. Birmingham good for showing a low ping on the result of course.
Interestingly also if I test using my laptop the ping time is less than half than on my pc, it seems wireless has an effect on latency doing throughput.

...and the london namesco, the trancefm can be dodgy from time to time. the birmingham server gives me 3 or 5ms ping sometimes over wireless, whereas it gives me 14 or 15 every time wired, mmmm dodgy
the birmingham one gives me a solid 50 right through the day :)

an alternative possibility is that some of us have poorer quality routing to the birmingham speedtest server.
I have the firewall on on the superhub by the way, IP Scan + IP flood are unticked though, and it works flawlessly :)

Reminds me of the famous phrase "If I've told you once I've told you a million times - do not exaggerate!".
I don't obsess about speed or ping tests, but I would say if it were the same for 'near enough everyone' then the forums etc would have many more comments from many more people.
I do feel for people who have problems - and have had them myself over the years - but I think you will find you are in the minority.
A couple of ping tests (from up north where it's grim!!):

well at nine in the morning, i can get as low as 7ms jitter, but at peak times, like 6pm when you ran yours, I get at least 10ms, even up to 20ms jitter
