my problem doesnt concern the speed im getting...on speedtest.net i usually get the full 30mb download speed
my concern is trying to play games smoothly on virginmedia
everytime i try and play a game of cod the mod tells me im lagging
after a trawl thru their forums i came across a recommendation to use winmtr to trace the server
every time i do it theres massive packet loss after my local server
ive posted a thread on virgins help forum but it takes ages for any replies
any hints or tips i could try from anyone on here?

Run a pathping to bbc.co.uk (or the games server you are connecting to) in a command prompt, this will shop any packet loss in the VM network and where they are occuring.

If it not happening on their network there's not a lot they can do about it.

am i right in thinking that theres no packet loss too bbc?

by the way im connected thru ethernet cable to the superhub.....and playing thru a pc

craigj2k12

thats 0% packet loss there

the problem is with linx and affects routing to maidenhead

pip08456

You have no packet loss via the VM network. Any problem you have must be outside of it.

Perhaps the game server has a problem, try the same to that.

Nothing wrong there, I didn't expect there to be. Craig may have other ideas but I don't know what.

Which "Local server" were you referring to?

craigj2k12
23-04-2011, 23:36
the maidenhead linx routing server that VM uses is causing packet loss problems recently.

those downstream power levels are slightly out of spec

Only slightly and wouldn't be causing the packet loss, any problem at linx belongs to them.
Hence my asking which local server the OP was referring to.

A pathping to the COD server would show where the packet loss is occuring

here the winmtr to the game server....as u can see after my local belfast server theres a massive hit on packets being lost....but how come other pathping traces are ok?

pip08456

However a pathping to bbc.co.uk shows no packet loss via the Belfast router.
Try a pathping to alpha-networks.co.uk .

I've tried it and get no packet loss.

i know...thats whats so wierd.....how come the pathpings to bbc and game servers are ok....but winmtr AND mods or other games say im laggy??

Not being an online gamer I cannot give a definitve answer. I would suggest it is down to VM's traffic shaping policy wrongly detecting your connection to the game server as P2P. (which it is) but not having been whitelisted as a game server app.

Since implementation traffic saping has caused problems with a lot of gamers and, I have to add not just with VM, with gaming traffic not being recognised as such.

It just appears that other ISP's recognise and solve the problem quicker.

slightly off topic, but how come he is bonding 4 channels for a 30 mb package when most people on 50 only bond 3?

Depends if it is Cisco kit or Motora at the Hub, nothing unusual. My 50Mb bonds on 4 channels.

so how could this be highlighted to VM if it is their traffic shaping policy detecting it as p2p?

Via their forum.

Don't forget I merely suggest this could be the cause.
