Ive just noticed special offers via there website of £25 for 50meg BB, and £15 for the 1st 3 months, im currently an old o2 broadband customer (no limits/restriction/shaping/p2p shaping etc at all) but I only get 12meg out of my 16meg line.

Is it worth me considering going Virgin broadband ? Im already a tv line/tv package with them.

Ive been put off in the past since ive heard they still p2p traffic shape people even at 3am when there not suppose too ! and other many horror tales...

but id be happy to newsgroup from 12pm to 10am if it means I get full speed ?

Hmm tough one, o2s legacy package is very good.

It sure is and since im an old o2 bb customer im not like the new customers that are p2p shaped/etc..... im on what could be called a true ISP broadband server without any restrictions or issues and my 11meg still working 100%.

I don't use newsgroups but the question is:

Is a throttled 50meg faster than o2?

During the throttling period I'd say there's not much difference but as the OP mentioned he wouldn't mind downloading outside those times then it's a no brainer.

Dependant on the plooperhub of course.:D

Just to correct the OP he can download from 12pm-5pm weekdays and 12pm-12am weekends without throttling.

Strongly recommend you don't - as noted VM have a detrimental user policy and if you describe yourself as a 'heavy' newsgroup user you'll likely infringe it at some point.

The beauty of virgin is it doesn't use your phoneline, you could get it installed and try it for 27days then cancel one or the other. You should get extra off from quidco.com

Yes, I think he meant 12am - 5pm weekdays and 12am - 12pm weekends.

and 12am to 12pm is plenty time for downloads...

not bad but still a hard choice to make but a no brainer if I want the speeds :)

Torrent downloads don't seem to be as affected by traffic shaping as newsgroup downloads. Apparently using SSL can avoid some of the newsgroup shaping but I don't know as I just use the free VM server.

yeah some guys have reported using different ssl ports has given back the speeds....

Torrent downloads are affected just the same. Traffic shaping varies area by area depending on the loading.

In my experience torrent downloads aren't as affected for some reason.

I can get 30-40Mbit torrent downloads but newsgroup downloads run at 2-6Mbit during peak times. Strange, I know, but that's what I get for some reason.

Perhaps just lucky.

Ive heard this also... but I wonder if anyone has been cut off or warned about newsgroup/torrent use if there using it during non peak hours of course.

As far as I see during non peak hours you 'should' be able to do what you wanna do

Ive mirrored this thread on another forum and got some interesting feeback which I posted here:

does seem the positive overall but some have warned me even if you did download 250gig u could get a warning letter, yet people that might do 1tb may not get anything... does feel a bit hit and miss and perhaps im safer staying put !

£135 via quidco for new customers! I'd go for it
