Every time I turn the cable modem on sometimes I switch to a one of the four different downstream frequency below is this normal? by the way I am on 10mb and my modem is a ambit 256, also just to let you know the upstream remains the same at all times.

10mb has one downstream channel, i think?

on the 50mb, i have four channels, and each has a different frequency, they are all the same speed. it seems to pick a different frequency and the 'main' one, i.e. the one that comes up at the top of the stats page. if you only have 1 channel, it will change between them but it shouldnt affect the service

think about it like radio stations, all stations broadcast on different frequencies, and no matter what station your tuned into, the music is the same volume

(in terms of broadband, the volume would be the download speed) ;)

unless your getting bad service on one of the frequencies, I wouldnt worry about it

you on the overlay network, which is docsis3 so multiple downstream channels, however it has backwards compat with docsis1 devices so you basically connect to only one channel at a time. If that channel gets saturated your performance will drop whilst someone on docsis3 would auto balance to a lower utilised channel. In short nothing major to worry about and is probably better than the legacy network.

Just out of interest, what does that "Tools" link do?

The VMNG300 has an identical interface but red text and no Tools link, just the Modem one.

It gives stupid paranoid people the ability to change the default password of the modem and therefore lock themselves out of the configuration screens when they invariably forget what they put in its place and unless the agent knows the master login details we usually end up sending out a replacement unit.;)

We much prefer the tools to be left well alone.
