View Full Version : General Renewals & Cancellations : 2011
An insider at CW has already indicated that the Vampire Diaries will be renewed for Season 3, and should be joined by 90210 and Gossip Girl. They have also indicated that Life Unexpected and One Tree Hill will get the chop.
No news on Supernatural yet, but Smallville will also not return (that was already expected/planned).
Haven, Warehouse 13, Lost Girl, Weeds, True Blood, Sarah Jane Adventures and Futurama are all returning in 2011 already.
The top chief at The CW expects Supernatural to be renewed.
Stargate Universe although dropped by SyFy is rumoured to 'possibly' getting taken by another station, although it is just a rumour.
The Cape has had it's episode count cut from 13 to 10. Episode 10 just finished filming so it won't be given a proper finale if cancelled.

Hardly surprising about The Cape... It was doomed as soon as Summer Glau joined the cast! ;) :(
Yeah, she's the unluckiest actress about. I think everything she's been a main/recurring character on has been cancelled.
In other news, NCIS has been renewed for a 9th season. The show continues to rise in the ratings. Last season it was averaging 19m, and this season it's so far averaging 20m with the last episode having over 22m viewers. I don't think I've saw a show that's been on for 8 years continue to increase in ratings.

It might follow The Listener, and get picked up by CTV ..all be it over a year after it was canned on US TV.
But SyFy fund every episode of Stargate (around $1 million an ep?), I assume with the way MGM is at the moment, another broadcaster would have to do the same

I really enjoy NCIS - I also enjoyed JAG though. I find NCIS much more lighthearted than CSI for example, just because the cast work so well :)
Even the follow-up NCIS:LA is different but has good characters

The show I regret being cancelled was Life..It's been repeated lately and I think it's a real shame that we won't get to see the reasons for what happened to him.
The problem with Life was that they totally rebooted during the first and second season. It killed the show.
Also renewed for 2011 are Glee & The Big Bang Theory.

I forgot to mention that the Big Bang Theory got renewed for three more seasons (5,6 & 7) in 2011, 2012 & 2013.

Well I'll be pleased to see the next series whenever it shows over here.

Futurama has been renewed for a seventh season.
http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/ustv/news/a310841/futurama-renewed-for-seventh-season.html
Futurama's season numbering is very confusing. Most people are considering last summers 13 as Season 6, and this summer as season 7 - thus making the renewal equal to Season 8 & 9.

Well, although Stargate Universe had already been cancelled, there had been a slight hope that the SG franchise may still return with some sort of TV movie (if not to wrap up SG:U, then perhaps the mooted SG:A movie or another SG-1 movie).
Alas, that hope has been dashed. Stargate is dead.
"SGU continuation, other movies dead — for now" (http://www.gateworld.net/news/2011/04/wright-sgu-continuation-other-movies-dead-for-now/)
Don’t expect to see Stargate Universe — or any other part of the franchise — come blazing back on television or DVD. At least not in the near future.
Stargate writer, executive producer and mastermind Brad Wright took the stage earlier today at Creation Entertainment’s Official Stargate Convention in Vancouver, British Columbia and proceeded to update and clear the air on the fate of the latest series, Stargate Universe.
“We just recently found out that the SGU movie is not going to happen,” Wright said during his stage panel today. “It took too long. We just couldn’t get it together in time, and the window has closed. It’s actually sad for me, because after 17 years, I’m cleaning out my desk tomorrow morning.”
(snip)
Wright also confirmed that the proposed Stargate SG-1 and Atlantis movies have been permanently shelved, along with another movie idea he had been trying to get a greenlight on, which would have combined and involved cast members of all three series. Scripts for the first two of those projects, tentatively titled Stargate: Revolution and Stargate: Extinction (respectively), were completed well over a year ago.
(snip)
Damn :(
I'm now at mid-season 7 of SG-1 on my Stargate run-through. Going to be re-watching SGA in parallel soon.
What's the matter? Ashamed to say that a Stargate-a-thon is better than a Trek-a-thon on here? ;)
Shame that SGA won't get to finish it's storylines, that's what I hate about cliffhangers for a season ender. You may never find out what happens when the writers intended you to find out. I'm sure I read that SGU would end on a clifffhanger? Also has anyone else noticed that each franchise lasted half the amount of time than the one previously?

LOL, not ashamed, just didn't want to drag the thread further away.
Definitely a shame about Atlantis & Universe. I'd love more SG-1, but at least it ended properly. Atlantis left a lot to resolve, and Universe is going to end on a cliffhanger as you mentioned.
I mentioned on BXB that hopefully the scripts will at least get leaked or something, or perhaps turned into books. No idea if that's remotely likely though.
TBH, I wont miss SGU much. It just wasnt that good IMO, it was no surprise [to me] that it got killed off.
SGA was just starting to get interesting, shame that finished when it did, and I wish SG1 had continued as well. I thought they could have got another couple of seasons out of that.

You meant SGU, right? Both SG1 and SGA finished their regular series with a finale.
Both SG1 and SGA may of had a finale but SG1 got a movie to finish the storyline. SGA ended on a cliffhanger without a movie or 6th season wrap up the stories.

SGA ended on a cliffhanger ...
No it didn't. The Atlantis base ended-up on earth. That was it. I don't call that a cliff-hanger. Okay, yes. The story could have continued in the next film, but it wasn't - by definition - cliff-hanger as there was nothing to resolve in the next episode; 'cos there wasn't one ;)

Doesn't mean they HAVE to go with the lowest common denominator. There can only be so many make over and reality dating shows before everyone turns off the TV and resorts to finding something worthwhile watching online. They are being their own worst enemies if they want to retain audiences.

Maggy most of the shows cancelled are quite expensive. If the producers do not see enough viewing figures for the advertisers they will not keep the show on. Reality shows and dating shows are cheap fillers while the money makers keep getting picked up.
I am pretty sure they have a good idea what they are doing they pay their guys a lot of money just because you and me do not like it when some shows get cancelled does not mean they are doing the wrong thing by the viewer or themselves.

One thing you forgot is sponsorship. The reason that The Sarah Connor Chronicles survived so long despite low viewing figures is that the studio wanted to keep the Terminator brand alive long enough to release Terminator Salvation.
I think it's also the reason Fringe got a fourth season (nice big notice on the end of each episode that states that cars and other promotional considerations were provided by Ford). Sadly, as in both cases they are or were excellent series.
Personally, I think that while the studios need to make money, this can lead to them being a little short sighted now. It seems as though if a series doesn't get big viewer numbers in it's first series (or in a couple of cases, after a few episodes), it gets axed. The problem with this is there have been a few series that haven't really reached their full potential (in terms of story or audience size) until series 2 or 3. Star Trek The Next Generation being one example.
