Hi, Just agreed to move to 50Mb service. Can anyone confirm the router that is currently provided now and if this uses standard firmware or modified VM firmware please?

It used to be a Netgear which came with modified firmware. I refused to use it solely on that principle and to this day it remains shrink wrapped in its box. Why does VM try to force their **** software and everything on me?

Anyways, I have always been a linksys man and for 50mbit I bought the wrt150N which has been working flawlessly for the last year

The Virgin router which had there own firmware was the one provided for the lower tiers, the 50Mb netgear had netgear firmware, the router that is now suppilied is a Dlink not sure of the model number.

The Netgear WNR2000 came with standard Netgear firmware and even updated itself on first use they were originally supported only by Netgear, only the Netgear WGR614 came with Virgin firmware.

There are a few netgears hanging around when there was a shortage of d links due to the volcanic ash cloud!

Yes - ask for a refund on your free router.

You will just receive whatever router the engineer has on his van.

Well I'll just wait and see what surprise I get then. Hopefully I'll not have to live with it for too long anyway as I've just heard that the Vigor 2130N is (at last) now available in the UK.

Really, given that there are plans for 100Mb, 200Mb then perhaps 400Mb connections, VM ought to be providing 1Gb ethernet + wireless n routers from now on. 10/ 100 ethernet routers are a thing of the past now.

The correct equipment will be supplied for each tier as and when required.;)

I imagine those routers are very expensive so they will probably exchange your dlink for one that's faster when you go 100Mb

Oh they will get different equipment when they upgrade from 50Mb without a doubt, notice I said equipment.https://www.cableforum.co.uk/images/local/2012/09/18.gif

Should be trialing the "equipment" later on this year

its a Netgear WGR614-9VGUKS which indeed has VM's own custom firmware installed, i sold mine on eBay as they are rubbish routers & are well known for being problematic, plus i was already using my own router for my wired network.

I am guessing they are already trialling the "equipment" with the 200Mb trialist.

Does it have gig-E? I've a gig network in my house and it makes a hell of a difference.

Although the 50Mb modem has a Gig Ethernet port if that helps

;)

The combined modem-router he's probably referring to wouldn't be much use for 100Mbit if it didn't have GbE would it? ;)

They're messing with at least a couple of them, one is off the shelf another that comes to mind is custom.

As far as how thrilling / cool / exciting they are it's a cable modem and a router, not especially fap worthy it gets packets from your PCs and other devices onto the Internet via either dual-band N wireless or Gigabit Ethernet and an 8x4 DOCSIS 3 modem.

I ended up with the D-Link when i had 20mb installed then the Netgear when i upgraded to 50mb :erm:

Doesn't matter as i have both now but just seems a bit ass backwards.

I should probably get back on the blower to VM, as when I had my 50meg installed the guy didn't have any routers (I believe you're supposed to get a wireless dongle too) but said that he's put a note on my account details and as soon as they get the next batch they'll post it out to me.

That was almost 3 months ago now, and I've heard nothing :(

Not overly fussed if they don't. It's just a case of "I'm entitled to it, so I want it". Will probably only get used if my current router dies unexpectedly.

Still, it's the principle :P

Ring up and ask for both items, it sounds like it was around the time of the volcano which caused some issues with wireless kit.

And the surprise was.... a WNR2000. All up and running in a few minutes. Seems OK for now.

I was on the phone bitching as soon as the install was completed (a Friday) as I only had ADSL modem/routers and having no router was a PITA. They fed me some BS about the Icelandic volcano disrupting supplies which I considered to be laughable and I got one (a Netgear WNR2000) by courier on the Monday. It came with a dongle which I wasn't entitled to and didn't want which they then tried to charge for causing more bitching from me.

When the volcano was erupting we actually ran out of D Link 615 routers and had to source the Netgear WNR2000 router as an interim replacement, so what they told you was 100% correct.

If you are on 50Mb you are entitled to a dongle, but if they send one out in error it is there problem.

They gave me credit back for the dongle and said I can keep it. I've no use for it as I'm fully wired and I only have the WiFi on for when my son comes around with his smartphone.

Well they ran out of routers certainly but I still have trouble buying the volcano story which sounds a very convenient excuse.

The routers were shipped in by air freight. No flights for a while due to volcano = modem shortage.

kwikbreaks
08-07-2010, 14:45
I'd figured that the lack of flights was being blamed but didn't expect cheap consumer routers to be imported that way - containers by seafreight was more my expectation.

Only if they are Chinese in origin but if they come from Eastern Europe they come via airfreight, nothing to do with convenience but just the way we source our products.

Netgear was a nightmare.

Died after minimal use (used modem a lot).

Got the D-Link.

Full Speed, no increase in latency.

D-Link > Netgear.
