i have had 50mb for a while now had no problems with it and always had good speeds, however this morning my internet is not working.

phoned up virgin media did a few tests got it working again but now i have slow speeds, phoned virgin again checked modem etc and im told the power levels are to high (got and engineer coming out friday).

my question is it common for power levels to be fine and then all of a sudden thay are to high ?

MODEM CONFIG

Power Level
(dBmV)11.32 11.69 11.67 11.42

SPEED TEST

Wed, 9 Jun 2010 16:55:09 UTC

Test 1: 1024K took 1032 ms = 992.2 KB/sec, approx 8176 Kbps, 7.98 Mbps
Test 2: 1024K took 698 ms = 1467 KB/sec, approx 12088 Kbps, 11.8 Mbps
Test 3: 1024K took 1096 ms = 934.3 KB/sec, approx 7699 Kbps, 7.52 Mbps
Test 4: 2048K took 2249 ms = 910.6 KB/sec, approx 7503 Kbps, 7.33 Mbps

Overall Average Speed = approx 8867 Kbps, 8.66 Mbps

Power levels do look high, speeds look poo. Hopefully only a case of adjusting levels to correct.

For levels to be high, it could be that the network has recently been checked in your area and if found to be low, they could be increased to bring it into spec. Or, the person who put the modem in, didn't check them at the time and they have always been high, but not enough to cause an issue

From my perspective, only a partial picture is provided if you only give the DS power level. There's a host of other diagnostic information present in the FULL STATS and the modem event log (MINUS your CM-MAC address).

For example, codeword errors, if present would match the high downstream power level. Your RxMER is important. I would also expect u[stream power issues if the modem is unable to fully read what it receives when doing the keep-alives.

So if you can post the full stats ....

If the power has suffen;y jumped, then as dannyfc has said, maybe work in your area or a misbehaving line amplifier.

everyone seems to be having this problem over the last couple of days no matter where they are in the country. I wonder if it is something to do with the thunder and lightning over the weekend that affected something centrally on the VM network

Broadband does not use a central headend, it has 3 National headend so the faults cannot be in any way related, also remember only faults tend to show themselves on here.

i know, i just think it is a freaky coincidence that exactly the same problem with the same cause has raised it's head over the last couple of days. I dont know how things work in the network (e.g i connect to street box, street boxes feed into main box for city, which feeds into main whatever over in nottingham which goes to main thing for country) but I was trying to say that rather than it bring a one off with my street box, that it is was maybe a a problem which needed fixing higher up the ladder if so many people are having it from so many different areas.

Anyways, praise goes to the english tech dudes because they got the problem fixed within 2 hours of the engineer coming round this morning. F*ch the indian call centers, they have once again proven themselves useless. Monday night they said "I have run some tests sir and I can see that you modem is faulty and needs replacing"; making me wait 3 days for somebody to come round and tell me that it isn't my modem before he even looks at it. Surely if they actually ran a proper line test they would see that the modem isn't faulty and that other peeps were having the same problem. I even gave them all the info about the T3 timeouts, correctable codewords and the messages from the error log thinking that it would help them diagnose the fault and then they could have logged an area fault and got it foxed there and then.

I think I am going to have a career change and tell everyone I work in tech support. It must be easy enough to do: "I have ran a line test and everything is working fine, you must have a virus on your pc".

As I said above the is No National Fault as the vast majority of the network has no issues, otherwise when I am in work every call would be a 50Mb call about the same fault, which thankfully does not happen due to the being no National Issue.

You may see a similar sounding fault on here but that all can be unless they are connected to the same cabinet or uBR, the network stretches from the south coast all the way up to Broughty Ferry which is north of Edinburgh.

ok so the engineer just left and the problem is still not resolved.

engineer checked speed only getting 7.4mb
so then checked
modem config all ok
tryed net with out router speed still the same
connected net straight from the main cable(not using spliter) speed still the same

changed modem speed still the same
did something with the green box put our connection in to a diffrent port, but speed still the same

so now he has handed the job over to the lead technican in the area (possible cause is damage to the green box as some kids have ripped the door off)

so still paying for 50mb but only getting 7.4mb what a service

TBH if the box has been broken into by local scroats how is VM responsible? If they are doing their best to correct it then they are providing a service surely.

so i was ment to have an engineer out today, had to take the day off work. engineer phoned up and said he has given the job to his colleague and he would be out between 2 and 3pm that never happend

then get a call from the orginal engineer to see if his colleague had been out yet, i said NO, so he said he would call his colleague back.

i then get another call to tell me that the engineer is stuck on a big job and probally wont be out today but would phone to sort a time for tommorow. AND THAT HASENT HAPPEND.

I've had crap 50mb since Saturday, engineer came out today and said it was a regional issue but the service status website says everything is fine. This is in the SW London area.
