I apologize in advance as I'm sure this question has been asked and answered numerous times before.
My dad has cable broadband connected to his virgin modem and his since bought a laptop as his desktop died.
I am unsure which router to buy for him. I have a netgear DG834G which he can have if it is suitable. If not can you point me in the right direction as to which router he needs.
He only emails and browses and so doesn't need anything super fast for gaming etc.
thanks very much

If he is on VM National (ADSL via a BT line) service it will do, if he is on VM cable services then it won't.

For cable services for his needs here's a look for reference, you may find them cheaper elsewhere.

Which brands are good quality?

What spec should I be looking for?

For yout fathers needs you don't really need to look for quality as such. Just a basic wireless router should do him fine. Obviously if online gaming etc were important then it would be a different issue.

If you PM me your details I have one here he can have for a cable connection.

If he is on Cable any of the routers in this link will do, click HERE (http://www.pcworld.co.uk/gbuk/cable-wireless-routers/727_7087_70094_xx_xx/xx-criteria.html)

If he is on ADSL ( through the phoneline ) any of the routers in this link will do, click HERE (http://www.pcworld.co.uk/gbuk/bt-wireless-routers/727_7086_70093_xx_xx/xx-criteria.html)

Make sure the modem is 'DSL' NOT 'ADSL' and it should be fine. I have a Linksys hooked up to mine which runs fine. Is a little long in the tooth now and could do with a little more speed but performs reliably!

hi,

i am using a dlink-615 VM supplied.

would like to change as not happy with it's performance ie w-fi coverage hopeless.

when i was back with BT there home hub had an option to power down the wi-fi for a certain ampount of hours ie over night.

i would like this function in a cable-DSL router.

has any one found a wire-less router with the same function ?

When I was using stock firmware I was able to get an excellent signal throughout the entire house with multiple wireless devices connected when the transmit power was on its lowest setting, which is 12.5% if I remember correctly.

DD-WRT firmware gives you this option and it's compatible with the DIR-615.

I believe the 615 can do this on the dd-wrt firmware.
