Slow broadband speeds - Derby

Since May 1st my internet speed has been awful, and when it does want to work I can only visit a few sites which load properly, some take time, and some don't load at all, including the Virgin Media site. I rang them today about the problem and said they know the situation and it will hopefully be sorted by the 17th May

17 friggin days with hardly no connection. Do I still have to pay for my connection for it lasting this long or by law do I have to pay up? Just wondered as it's been a nightmare with me working from home and having to go to my mates to use the net.
