Take the speed tests with a pinch of salt but it does show you the uptake in your area.

Don't suggest anyone posts a URL as it will give away your postcode though you could copy the image and upload it somewhere, here's mine:

I just tried it on my road and it is quite inaccurate, but in an amusing way as it shows that ADSL in my area is not even worth a balloon their speeds are 0.3Mb to 1.5Mb.:D

The speed test was showing me at 6Mb, then I realised I was still downloading startrek online beta at 4.5Mb :D

doesn't even show my 50mb just a '3' network

the fact it shows 11.2mb right next to the BT exchange in Swansea which is 20mb enabled shows its innacurate.

Also shows Virgin broadband to be between 1.9 and 6.4mb only.

Interesting post...
Can now see why I think virgin is so ****...

The fact there is 27 VM connections in the 2 roads parallel to mine now doesn't surprise me Vm connections around here pretty much grind to a halt 5pm onwards!

Having said that, not happy my average speed is in most cases 4mbps slower then my neighbours!! Same package, same price... Booo to VM! :P

Kymmy
13-01-2010, 21:55
It shows though VM connections in the village of half a Mb and others round about 3-6Mb where as everyone in the village gets full speed. It's simple that Speedtests are only relevant when you don't have anything else down/uploading ;)

Ignitionnet

It was more the amount of people around on VM that is worth looking at. The proportion of connections that are VM can be interesting to know. Over half of all the connections here are VM according to that.

I've been using that speed checker for some time now. It's accurate for one thing.

The important thing to note about the area stats (you can zoom and scroll around the UK!) is that the various subscribers tend to engage randomly.

If they use the checker regularly, you can see the times at which they got what speed and compare correspondingly with others who have done likewise.

So, over time, the statistics will build up and the comparisons will become useful.

Exactly. Its' use is purely as a comparison tool, taking it as an absolute is probably not wise but it's useful and interesting to see the penetration of different services in your and other areas.

According to that site the is about 9 people in my area with broadband, that probably means that we are to laid back to bother with the interminable testing that some people seem to do day in day out, or we are still in the dark ages of the early 90's.:D

I know but my area has had Virgin for 14 years, plus all the ADSL connections that the must be around but no one here appears to use that speed site, I do not because I know its not very accurate.

All the ADSL connection are really bad in my area, glad I can get Virgin Media.

Someone is getting 3.36 on a 50 package about a mile from me glad i went to ADSL now:)

If your graphs tend to be that empty sounds like my area is quite high uptake, especially given there's very few flats in it.

That could be due to the speed test. I ran it last night and got 2Mb...I ran the same test this morning and got 10Mb.

At least now I know I have neighbours on the 50Mb tier cheers BBd

The two VM connections right where I am show 1.98Mb and 2.44Mb. So that's an S package and a throttled 10Mb package then. I can get 10Mb any time day and night when it hasn't dropped. 9836Kb and 509Kb just now using same site.

DSL are all below 1Mb

So if people have run a speed test from their site, they will appear on this map?

Because, surely most people only run a test to confirm that their speeds are running slower than usual, and don't usually bother when everything is hunkydory?

I looked up my postcode, it shows Virgin to be good, AOL bb to be shockingly bad. I don't show on there, nor do my neighbours.

Have to agree with Pia's findings, also my results don't show either!

I suggest it's not a very good representation as it requires uptake on this particular speed test site. I reckon the uptake is maybe less than 1% in my area.

You have to run the test then click "See results in your area" to add your results to the map.

I just tried my parents Post code and it showed BT ADSL Speeds of just 0.95mb/s in the same street as the BT Exchange there also.

Again ladies and gentlemen take the speed test results there with a large pinch of salt. They are useful as a relative measure to one another only, not to be taken as absolutes.

1) We don't know what service these people subscribe to, just their ISP.
2) We don't know how good the speed tester was running at the time the tests were taken.
3) People tend to test their speeds when something has gone wrong and they think their connection is slow.

Take relatively, not absolutely!

Tried it just out of interest to compare with other speedtest sites. Methinks there may be a flaw in the test somewhere.

on every other site i tried, i get approx 50.40 down and 1.64 up.

on this one, 9412kb down and 348 up

I don't get mine... The ADSL speeds seem to get worse as you get closer to my exchange. Maybe the results are biased as its normally only people that have connection problems that check their speeds.
