Awful ping and packet loss at most times of day on my 50MB connection in Glasgow G14.

here's an example of a traceroute to bbc.co.uk

traceroute to www.bbc.net.uk (212.58.251.195), 64 hops max, 52 byte packets

Anyone else suffering up here over the past couple of days? I have also experienced intermittent packet loss of up to 67%

I managed to change my IP by swapping out the router attached to the cable modem which gave the modem a new MAC address to latch onto. I am now on cpc1-broo7-2-0-custxx.xx-x.cable.virginmedia.com instead of cpc3-broo7-2-x and all is fine which seems to indicate that card 3 in the Broomhill UBR is borked or oversubscribed.

As a reference I rebooted with the original router (Apple Airport Extreme) and it put me back onto cpc3 once again. the DIR-615 supplied router puts me on cpc1 as does a direct ethernet connection to the computer.

How long will it take for the network to "forget" my MAC/router pairing in order to use my Airport Extreme once again and not on cpc3 !!

Edit: cpc1 is now pinging over 600ms and is just as bad.

Hate to tell you this but you're on exactly the same card, upstream, etc, on cpc1 or cpc3, that is just a designation for a group of IPs and doesn't change the bandwidth you are on. You only have one upstream available on the overlay network :(

Does sound like it might be upstream congestion, contact tech support via the newsgroups and see what they can tell you.

So far as I know, cpc1 and cpc3 refer to private address ranges or DHCP scope on the UBR, in this case Broomhill CMTS #7. I don't think that the number after cpc refers to an interface card.

They could have swapped interface card and improved your performance but I don't think it can be deduced from the "publicly" available CMTS information.

EDIT: I hadn't seen BBings' post above before posting this. But I had read his stuff here: http://www.cableforum.co.uk/board/12/33658401-my-ip-has-changed-ubr-has.html
