I have had the virgin media 20mb package for about a week. I am in Exeter, United Kingdom.

Initially download was at about 7.5Mb/s but now varies from 0.3 - 1.6Mb/s for the majority of the day. Ping to Maidenhead server on Speedtest.net used to be approx 19 and now varies from 49 - 140. I have tried restarting the modem and router etc. A few times it has downloaded at 5Mb/s but this is almost never the case now.

I am using the Netgear WNR2000 router.

These are my modem stats:

Cable Modem : DOCSIS 1.0/1.1/2.0 Compliant
MAC Address :------------------ (I dont think I need to post this)
Serial Number : ------------------ (I dont think I need to post this)
Boot Code Version : 1.1.2c
Software Version : 2.111.1001
Hardware Version : 1.9

Downstream Lock : Locked
Downstream Channel Id : 6
Downstream Frequency : 331000000 Hz
Downstream Modulation : QAM256
Downstream Symbol Rate : 5360.537 Ksym/sec
Downstream Interleave Depth : taps32Increment4
Downstream Receive Power Level : 6.6 dBmV
Downstream SNR : 40.8 dB

Upstream Lock : Locked
Upstream Channel ID : 1
Upstream Frequency : 18800000 Hz
Upstream Modulation : QPSK
Upstream Symbol Rate : 2560 Ksym/sec
Upstream transmit Power Level : 47.0 dBmV
Upstream Mini-Slot Size : 2

Any ideas as to why it is going this slow and what I can do? Surely download speeds should be at least at 9Mb/s?

Latest results from Speedtest.net

Download 0.70Mb/s
Upload 0.62Mb/s
Ping 68

Any Help is greatly appreciated.

Hi mate,

Just posted a thread with exact same problems - got 20meg installed on Wednesday.

Ping/latency is a joke (70odd to uk servers) and dl speed is less than 5meg.

Looks like, to me your downstream is a little high...

Looks like, to me your downstream is a little high...
Thanks for the response.

What does that mean though? Is it causing the signal to detriorate?

Sorry I'm not very well versed in how modems specifically work. What should the downstream ideally be for a 20mb connection?

All you will need to do, is phone tech support, tell them abotu the power level and engineer will come out and adjust the level oh and one, thing the MAC thing you put in brackets, never ever ever ever ever ever post your MAC address anywhere

Have you both tried a direct connection to the modem without the router in place?

Could the router at fault.
Could be the modem at fault.
Could be a cable at fault.
Easiest thing to do is test connected directly to the modem.

I have done. The speed improves slightly than compared to with router wireless. It's about 2 - 3.3Mb/s, which is still not good. And ping is ~45.

So I dont think its a problem with the router.

Signal levels are fine.

Upload seems a bit low, do you have any packet loss?

Anyone got any ideas? Everytime I call the help line and ask to be put through to a technician its always busy and ends my call.

Downstream Receive Power Level fluctuates between 5.7 and 6.9 ish.
Downstream Symbol Rate is 5360.537 Ksym/sec.

I mean this is ridiculous, it hasn't even been near 5mb/s in ages, majority of the time is ~ 0.4mb/s. This isnt just a peak time issue.

Downstream Symbol Rate is 5360.537 Ksym/sec

This has nothing to do with your download speed.

Look for something like
Bit Rate
20480000 bits/sec
Bit Rate
768000 bits/sec
That's mine for a 20Mb connection, the wording for your modem will be slightly different.

I'm in Exeter too and have had continual slow d/l speeds for the past fortnight.

I can only assume the reason is the rest of the students on the street increasing the contention ratio.

Is this general knowledge:

I just wonder if that is the source of my gaming problems..

VM say the problem is limited to its adsl customers.. yet thousands of warcraft players on virgins cable bb.. have also been getting the same problem from the same date as the adsl users.

I have the same problems with Xbox live, my ping is absolutely shocking and I'm dropping packets everywhere.

I have Explained this In My first ever Rant on this Site, Yes I called Virgin Media and They Said Few Areas In The UK are affected By slow Speed, However about mine I was Wrong, It was just Shoddy wiring, Call The tech, Dont rant On here because were not VM support, I was told the only way to resolve is was VM support

Your Problem can Link in any direction, From A loose Cable Coming for the Junction, Anything... and Your not gonna find out till you ring them.
