I'm due to be upgraded to 50mb tomorrow, and I'm using ubuntu which works perfectly with 20mb, so will it be just a case of switching modems (and checking the speed via blueyondergames), or would it be better if I were to temporarily install windows on another drive, and then switch back to ubuntu after the tech has gone.

If your happy to have a cabled connection to your *NIX box I can't see the tech objecting.

So it should be a s simple as just a modem switchover and then testing the connection speed.

Don't forget network card setup for optimum speeds.

ethtool eth0

And to set to full duplex:

sudo ethtool -s eth0 speed 100 duplex full autoneg off

HTH

Thank you for the information :)

I already have those settings, so all I have to do is turn off auto negotiation.

Does auto-negotiation not work then?

Some have found greater speeds by setting 100/full

I'm not sure :dunce:, all I have connected is an ambit 250, however I will be using the vm supplied router with 50mb, so, would it be better to leave autoneg enabled?

Won't hurt mate, its just one of the things the install tech's change on windows to get a greater speed if its needed.
If you don't need to then you don't need to, but you know how to just in case, I doubt many install techs would know how to change it via terminal.
Options, its a good thing :)

Unless you've got some really old and crappy network card or a really old crappy switch/router (you almost certainly haven't got either) or duff cabling then just leave everything as it is. Check the logs to confirm that it's negotiated "Full Duplex" (it will) if you really have to. Personally, I wouldn't bother. Job done.

Enjoy your new connection - no need to worry about that TCP Optimiser nonsense either :D. I'm no fan of Ubuntu to be honest, it just doesn't suit the way I do stuff, but I can't think of a single thing you need to change just because you're moving from 20Mb to 50Mb.
