I got Virgin installed last week but only really started playing with it last night. I consistently get about 8-9Mbps and not up near 20 which is what I thought I was paying for. The upload is about 0.75Mbps.

Is this normal, can I expect to only get a certain amount of bandwidth depending on where I live etc? I thought I had left all that behind when I stopped using ADSL :)

I am connecting through homeplugs (200 ones) and the WNR2000 N router, also tried directly to the modem but same result all the time.

Sorry if this is a newbie question...

Welcome to the forum :)

Under what circumstances are you getting this 8-9Mb? Downloading, newsgroups, torrents?? Just that not every link is capable of 20Mb on the single link, speedtests can be inaccurate and yes cable can still be subject to oversubscription.. (but not distance like ADSL)

If you are using windows xp, tcp optimizer would help in improving the speeds.

After rebooting computer check the speed on speedtest.net by selecting london server.

Post what modem you have and your power levels from your config pages of your modem. The should be a sticker on the bottom saying what model.

If using an Ambit modem please click here

If using any other modem click here

What I want you to post is the Downstream power levels including the SNR and the Upstream power levels for me thanks.
