speed is this about right

hi guys.im on 10 mb and all i seem to achieve is about 6.5 at any time of day.i'm wireless and in the next room about 20 ft from the modem/router through one brick wall.now i have never had any problems at all with connections etc and am very happy with the service received from vm. i just browse 99% of the time.no games etc but i was just wondering if you think 6.5 is perfectly good as regards the details above or should i be getting any more.please dont ask me to give any detailed figures as i am a neanderthal when it comes to computers!.cheers john

hmmm...I have a 10 mb connection and I average about 9.5mb.

What's your download speed like when your downloading a large file?

You're wireless computer is running XP which means you need to optimize your computer. Go to http://www.speedguide.net/downloads.php and download and run TCP Optimizer, set the slider to 10000 and click 'Optimal Settings' apply the settings and restart then run the speed test again.

Why would they advertise you possibly can't get 10mb?

hi.i mean't to help people like myself to try to get as near as possible to the quoted speeds. my car has 130mph on the speedo it would not get anywhere near that!!. just speed tested again up to 9.7.not too far from top speed!!. im happy with that thank you.cheers john

Don't be obtuse. He said they should "advertise the advice", obviously referring to TCPOptimiser.

And in answer to your question John, it is on the VM website in the broadband help pages but it is under the heading of "Getting the most from your 20Mb connection" because at the time it was unlikely to be of much benefit to 2Mb and 4Mb customers. However I fully agree that now that they do a 10Mb speed they really should make this advice more prominent. Please note that you should NOT recommend this application for people using Vista, it is only for people like youself running an older o/s such as XP.

thanks caph.i did notice the vm site advice but it highlights the 20 mb connection so i flicked past it thinking it would not apply to me(like i said i am a computer neanderthal).it would have helped it they had said it would also apply to computers with a 10mb connection.cheers john

Wrong. I have several Windows XP laptops on wireless that all achieve 10Mbps no problem at all.
