Hi,

I am trying to replace a cable modem for somone who has cable broadband.
They also have a router connected to the modem.
I am looking in to the idea of combining the two but I cant seem to find any "Cable modem routers", do many exist? What would be a typical price for one?

Is it just best to replace the modem?

Also, Can I use a regular 54mbps wireless adapter with a cable wireless router? If I need to replace the router as well, I am looking at the Netgear WGR614 which says that you need a Wireless G Adapter, is that true? or is just a bit of Netgear marketing?

The only cablemodems that you can use are the ones supplied by VM, which are only modems, so you have to use a seperate router.

If you are talking about Virgin broadband you cannot use combined modem/routers, you can only use a Virginmedia supplied modem but you can use any of the routers supplied by the likes of PC World just click HERE (http://www.pcworld.co.uk/martprd/store/pcw_page.jsp?BV_SessionID=@@@@1699838999.125018584 8@@@@&BV_EngineID=ccfcadeidefllfgcflgceggdhhmdgmh.0&page=ProductList&category_oid=-28361&show_all=true)

It sounds like you have a standard wireless adaptor which should be able to be used with most wireless routers.

You can get routers from Virginmedia with full technical support.

The Netgear WGR614v9 wireless G router is £40

The D link615 wireless N router is £50

The choice is yours.

I have seen the picture on the Chetnet site and wondered what the difference was, do you have one and is it any good.

In fact the one on the Chetnet site is a 2020 not the 2050.

I do have the 2050, but it's not in NAT mode so acts like a standard 250, the reason for this is the fixed IP's (I have a standard netgear WGT624 behind the router for the desktop PC's and the other IP's on a coupe of server :p: )

But it does look like the blue 250 on the chetnet site and does have dual mode support (USB/Ethernet)
