Hi all, im new to the forum

Ive just had 50mb installed on tuesday (netgear router)
and ive been having varying speed since.
I rung the support lne and they said it was common for a couple of days till it settles.
Doing various speedtest i sometimes get 40 then ill get 12 then 30

these are my modem powers

Down
RxMER
(dB) 37.64 38.26 38.61 N/A

Up
Power Level
(dBmV) 58.21 N/A N/A N/A

Ive also had the modem rest about 5 times in 2 days, is that normal.

Any help is appreciated.

:)

Hello and :welcome:

Your upstream power level is a bit high which might be causing you problems. You will need an engineer to adjust this level but I could be wrong.

My speed is irregular, although id depends when I do a speed test!! I usually get between 30 and 40mb and a upload of between 1.5 and 1.7 mb!! Quite happy though!! I try numion.com - useful!!!

What was the Downstream power levels as you only posted the RXMER which is the SNR, the power levels are right above them.

Thanks for that, as said above by Ben B the Upstream is definitely the issue so you should call the 50Mb support line tomorrow after 0800

I had power issues the other week, I changed from a 4db attenuator to a 3db attenuator.

Engineer came today tweaked the box and gave me a new modem, all levels are ok now.
But im still getting variation in d/l speeds.
Ive tried using the gamefiles.virginmedia.com site to d/l 4 demos at a time like it says and (did this with tech on phone) was getting no more than 2.5 across all 4 items.
Tried loads of different speedtests with varying results on all.
Im just confused why its good 1 minute then bad the next, think im going to try removing firewall and antivirus then trying it all again.

I thought the same as you when I first got 50meg but it was just congestion on the speed sites causing most of the issue.

I get the most consistent results from speedchecker.org - http://speedchecker.org/?result=a55664f6ea9a0236c81c14563eb55920

In general, most sites aren't up to delivering at 50meg speeds - this can often be intentional. If you do multiple things at the same time, you will see bandwidth usage go up. Note that 50meg downstream requires more than 1meg of upstream bandwidth available just for the ACKs. If you're upstream is busy, your downstream will be affected by it.

After initial concern, I became very happy with the performance after a couple of weeks usage.

Thanks ill bare that in mind, i couldnt even get speedchecker to post a speed, it just kept saying in que position 1 then failed attempt?
Ive tried using newsgroups to get an average speed and im getting between 2.2 and 3.5 max.

The one at the top gives these results.

Test 1: 1024K took 15 ms = 68266.7 KB/sec, approx 562518 Kbps, 549.33 Mbps
Test 2: 1024K took 0 ms = Infinity KB/sec, approx Infinity Kbps, Infinity Mbps
Test 3: 1024K took 16 ms = 64000 KB/sec, approx 527360 Kbps, 515 Mbps
Test 4: 2048K took 16 ms = 128000 KB/sec, approx 1054720 Kbps, 1030 Mbps

Overall Average Speed = approx Infinity Kbps, Infinity Mbps

Rang tech again yesterday afternoon, they said levels still are still wrong and the engineer will come back to you in a few hours.
I waited no one turned up, no phone call or anything.
Getting exactly the same problem today, not impressed saying im paying £52 for nowhere near 20meg let alone 50.

The Upstream is on the high side and if you are having any issues a call to the 50Mb support line may be in order.

Probably best to wait till tomorrow after 0800.

I seem to have sorted my problems out.

I had been using avira anti-virus with built in firewall and web guard etc, switching the firewall off and using zonealarm.
It was avira that was slowing stuff up, changed to another anti-virus and problem seems to have gone.
