View Full Version : VM Blocking Newsgroup Downloads?

Since the beginning of this week I have been unable to download any RAR/PAR2 files from music or moviie groups. NFO is fine and posts are shown ok. Other alt.binaries groups are ok. Redownloading headers makes no difference.

Is anyone aware of Virgin blocking downloads in the groups?

How old are these rar/par files? remember that they don;t exactly have a lot of retention.

Minutes - I specifically specified something within an hour of posting for testing and its size irrelevant - a small par file 1-2KB is blocked but a nfo file is not. Outside of movies/music binaries are absolutely fine.

Guess you mean from their own nntp server? What's the point in having binary servers if you can't download PAR2 files. Pah.

They aren't blocking from other nntp serveres (I'm using Giganews, albeit using SSL).

Just run a test and from a divx group using an nzb from an indexing site there was no problems at all

I can verify that - NZB posts from within VM are blocked though.

Could that be a more local issue rather than an arbitrary block by VM's news servers?

I dont think so...

alt.binaries.sounds.mp3.complete_cd is no good - even with external NZB
alt.binaries.warez.uk.mp3 is ok - even if you access directly from newsreader so it looks like VM are blocking selected groups.

No problems here. Nzb,s par2's etc. all ok.

Could they be trialling it? I'm in Peterborough - anyone else here who is willing to test?

Being specific to individual groups and to every post in that group (NZB, PAR, RAR, MP3 but not NFO) is indicitive of an ISP behaviour not a systems issue. The fact other groups are fine would tend to back that up but then I'm not the foremost expert on usenet.

I'm in peterborough and just tested an NZB from alt.binaries.sounds.mp3.complete_cd, and had no problems.

This could be part of the plans from the agreement with Universal Music etc to release the unlimited music download service.

Thanks Jellybaby

I'll just write it off to something weird my end then - really strange though!
