Hey guys, wondering if you can all help me. I currently have the Netgear WirelessG router, and don't get me wrong such a nice piece of kit, but as I'm a Mac user mostly now, I'm waiting to expand my collection of Mac stuff and use Apple made products, so...

Would anyone know if the Apple AirPort Extreme (http://store.apple.com/uk/product/MB763/AirPort-Extreme) is compatible with the modem Virgin Media give you (I'm on 10Mbps fiber optic)? I'd like to know this before I fork out £140 for a router, so I can expand my wireless network...

Many thanks,
Adam.

You just connect up the ethernet cable to your Airport and reboot the modem they shake hands and you have internet.

Anything with a MAC address should work with a Virgin modem.

Definitely compatible and a doddle to set up.

I'm currently using a Time Capsule connected to the VM modem in the front room with an Airport Extreme in my office connected via Ethernet.

Time Capsule is N only @ 5ghz for laptops and the Airport Extreme is running a mixed g/n network for iPhones and older devices.

Cheers. I only really asked as I bought a MacBook (early 2009 model) and just think I should take full ability of it and use an AirPort Extreme to get wireless Time Machine backups etc etc.

Are you mixing time capsule with airport extreme for time machine back ups, if you want Wireless back ups don't you need time capsule? http://store.apple.com/uk/product/MB765B/A/Time-Capsule-1TB?mco=NDc2ODIyNw

No mlayzell, I am using my own external HDD which I've partitioned to allow me a wireless storage and back-up area via Time Machine.

Airport Extreme is brilliant. We use it with the 20Mb service. We have a desktop PC, 2 wireless PC laptops and a Macbook all happily working off one base station.Best buy we ever made.Highly recommended.

Yeah no problems with mine either - mine's one of the earlier models with wireless-n and 10/100 ethernet.

Thanks.

Apple refurb store currently has them for £99. These are most likely the pre-March 2009 units that they are clearing out. As such they wont have the "simultaneous" Dual band option - which may or may not be useful for you. I'd guess that these are probably brand new - you'll get the 1 yr warranty anyway.

Another happy Airport Extreme owner. No problems in the two or so years I've owned it.

Time Capsule owner here and it works great with 50mb broadband - far better router than most too.
