Hi, I'm new to the forum I've had a trawl through but could not find a related topic.
Can anyone get to the newsgroups at the moment? I've been using them happily for years but last week my news reader asked me for a password for the first time, no matter what combination of user name/ password I gave it failed.
I use Xnews as a reader, so i reinstalled-no go. Tried the virgin help line and although they told that they don't support the newsgroups I did get a message left on my voice mail saying that it was a "server problem" and to date still is.
Can anyone access the newsgroups currently?
My email and web are fine.

Downloading from the newsgroups as I type. Have you tried a different news reader??

I agree, Xnews is years old, ok for headers though (if you like that sort of thing).

Virgin's newsgroups are working fine for me too.

Oh and welcome to CF :)

I take it you're using news.virginmedia.com

There is a problem with the NG's ATM, corrupting Binaries in most binary groups! Support are looking into it apparently.

So after many happy years with xnews I'll try something new. Don't like forte agent or "outlook" so any recommends.....thanks

I just use Windows Live Mail, does the job well generally.

I use newsleecher for binaries and thunderbird for text.

Got the same Authentication problem as you have and had it since 50mb was installed (works perfectly 2 minutes before 50mb went live!) so I assume for me at least it had something to do with my install - be it the IP not being recognized as a Virgin one or whatever. Doesn't make a difference what news reader i use

I used news.virginmedia.com yesterday - download 17Gb and was fine, might be a area fault I am using grabit.

Newsgroup access still unavailable in the Cambridge area, the virgin help line tells me that it is a problem that they are aware of and are working on it. So the problem is their end something about not recognising the domain.

In my experience, still only 7 days

Still won't work for me - still say authentication error ever since my 50mb upgrade!

Just tried it as well because I was concerned about the previous posters authentication issues, assumed it may be the new hostnames 50Mb users have got and relieved that my access works fine.

7 Days retention, which is pretty lame, not bad for £0 tho.

VM's news servers still corrupting binaries, been like this for about a month and still no sign of a resolution! How any company can take this long to sort out a serious issue like this is just incredible.

I thought I had this issue but it was an impending Hard Disk failure. All fixed now and no corruption issues so far.

From reading the support newsgroup it does seem to almost exclusively be grabit users though, doesn't it?

I've never had a problem with it corrupting binaries. (using newzbin).

Astraweb + Newsbin = OK, but VM + Newsbin = corrupt binaries. There is a post about this in virginmedia.support.usenet with Ref no: F001035570, so far some people are OK and others still not!

My hard drive is fine as well (WD1001FALS 1TB), ran the diagnostic on it for a laugh and surprise, surprise it's OK :)

I've been using NTL/VM + Grabit for years and don't seem to be having problems with corrupt binaries, I must be one of the lucky ones! :)
