View Full Version : Returning item to Amazon

Hi all

I brought a GPS unit from Amazon about 5 months ago.

It has recently been playing up and I now think there maybe a fault. It is outside Amazons 30 day return period and states I need to phone them I guess to get authorization to return the unit.

I would really like a replacement item but after such time will Amazon go down the repair route ?

Your in the wrong section.

Anyway, Amazon are very good with returns in my experence but you may be pushing it a tad. They may ask you to get it fixed under the standard 12 month warrenty with whoever made it. Worth a shot though!

I have a feeling this would be classed under the warranty that came from the manufacturer so they will probably tell you to contact the manufacturer directly.

The 12 month manufacturer's warranty is in addition to your statutory rights as a consumer.

Under the Sale of Goods Act 1979 (as amended) (http://www.berr.gov.uk/whatwedo/consumers/fact-sheets/page38311.html), your contract is with the retailer (Amazon).

It is the responsibility of the retailer to ensure that any goods sold "conform to contract": they must be as described, fit for purpose, of satisfactory quality, etc.

For up to six years after purchase (depending on how long something would be reasonably expected to last), the consumer has the right to demand a repair or replacement.

For the first six months after purchase, the onus is on the retailer to prove that the goods did conform to contract and are not faulty.

After six months, the onus is on the consumer to prove that the goods did not conform to contract and are faulty.


In addition to your rights under the SoGA, EU law also stipulates that you have a two year warranty on certain items. Again, this is with the retailer not the manufacturer.
