The cable attached by the engineer is too long. Can I just snip the cable to shorten it to the required length or is it a call out charge?

Curl it up and tie it?

If you do managed to get it shorted, you will only end up phoning up in 5 years wanting Virgin to come out and put a longer cable in because you have moved the room around ;)

I wouldn't cut it, you can never have enough, like already mentioned just curl it up if it looks messy and hide it behind or underneath something. You never know when you may need it longer, for whatever future service it may be for.

long cables frustrate me aswell, they always get damaged and cause problems, i always leave the right amount and if the customers want a longer one cus they might move the tv then i leave them an extension...

the amount of cable installers waste must cost virgin a small fortune lol

Try ringing up customer services and ask them to pull a few yards back from their end

Just stay on the phone while they do it and shout STOP when its the right length

Only joking
