Im wondering if i could ask a small favour of everyone.....

I used to like a bunch of candy here BEFORE THE YEAR 2000 and now the recipes have changed and they taste disgusting (@ least to me)

Im wondering though if this change WAS ONLY MADE IN THE USA!! (As the govt here seems to think they can tell people what they can and cant have)

Im wondering if someone the next time they are @ the market could look @ the ingredients for the following candy

Hershey bars - USED TO BE MADE WITH 'SOYA' LECITHIN (They changed to 'SOY' LECITHIN HERE AND TASTE HORRID NOW (TOO SWEET)) -- Might still use SOYA LECITHIN elsewhere.... (Which is a better ingredient)

M&MS (Plain) -- Used to be made with "MILK" .. (Changed in 2000 to using SKIM MILK,MILKFAT and also tastes disgusting) - Might still be using regular Milk elsewhere :)

If these candies ARE STILL MADE THE SAME WAY where you guys are, perhaps i could order both from somewhere in manchester or something!! (I havent had good candy in years)

Thanks for your help :)

Hershey chocolate is hard to come by here..In fact I have to go to a specialist online shop based in London and Brighton to get my fix especially of my fave Reece's Peanut Butter Cups.So I suspect that the ingredients will be the same for us as for you.however I'm sure they wil answer any query you make..they are a very helpful company.

They sell the Peanut Butter Cups and Nutrageous Bars in both the Sainsbury's Local and the Tesco Express here but I've NEVER EVER seen any other sort of Hershey's bar in this country, to be honest I don't really like the chocolate that much anyway

I used to find them in Woolworths for a while..no chance now that they have gone bankrupt.

Then I could find them in my favourite newsagents but no more.

Then Asda were selling them..not seen any for 6 months or more.

I've run out of places locally that sell them.

Cybercandy are now the only place I know sell them and the Hershey bars..In fact the company are amazing for what you can get..they even sell hard to find soda drinks that are out of production here.

I wasn't aware that there was any difference between 'soy' and 'soya' lecithin - I was under the impression that soy was the American word for the bean, and soya the English

The lecithin wouldn't make any difference to the flavour anyway - it'll be used as an emulsifier, so it's holding some ingredients together that normally would be unblendable (to make it simple). Are there any other differences in the ingredient declaration?

Interesting to find out what some ingredients actually do..though maybe I should be wondering why anyone would want to blend things that are unblendable..

Nah! I think I'll remain in ignorance..I'd hate to have another food group closed to me.;)

You're alright - butter and margarine are both emulsions, so you can carry on :)

You mean like oil and vinegar..well I just put them in a bottle and give em a good shaking before placing on my salad...no need for emulsifiers then...;)

Wouldn't have thought that would matter, seeing as Coggy would have eaten all that she wanted by then ;)

Not sure I really understand your post, Milk Choc M&Ms still taste the same to me. As far as I know most confectionary companies use semi skimmed milk or even skimmed as its healthier :)

Also any Hershey choc found in the UK is imported from the USA so will still have the same ingredients as over there.

Also could you please stop with all the capitals and @ signs. Type properly please.

I wasn't aware that there was any difference between 'soy' and 'soya' lecithinYup there is a slight difference...

The bars taste sweeter and not as good....... (Only thing they changed in them so it has to be that)

They may have just added more sugar or something?

That's what I was going to suggest - the lecithin won't affect taste / flavour at all.

Dude111 - the ingredient declaration has to be set out in a specific order. Unless US food labelling is radically different from EU law, the ingredients must be declared in the order of most - least (ie the ingredient that is present the most must be declared first). However, they may have increased the amount of sugar by an amount that didn't move it in the declaration

Most Hershey Chocolate has the distinct taste of puke. However Hersey's Bliss are fantastic.

Went to Hersey last summer, did you know the street lights in Hershey are all shaped like a Hershey Kiss?

They are the same all that has happened is that they changed the wording.

Isn't veg oil what our UK 'choc' has in it?

They are the same all that has happened is that they changed the wording. Then why do Hershey bars taste like crap now??

They were delicious before 2004,then when i noticed the change in taste they had changed to using SOY lecithin.. They tried to lie to me and say they were EXACTLY THE SAME....

This says what makes them different :)

http://www.goodoils.com/english/soya_lecithin.htm

"Soya LECITHIN" (soya lecithin is refined from soya, it is also one of the necessary fatty elements that the body needs)

"Soy LECITHIN" (Soy Lecithin is a basic element for the construction of human cells. It is vital for metabolism of cells and life itself.)

Thats why SOY LECITHIN makes hersheys candies taste sweeter and not as good,it is a BASIC ELEMENT,while soya is a bit more BULKY and it gives the chocolate a little LESS sweet taste but better taste. :)

Stephen

I think you are imagining it. All the Soy/Soya lecithin does is stop the cocoa and cocoa butter from seperating.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lecithin

Soy lecithin is an additive found in many everyday foods, but it's normally used in such small amounts that it rarely exceeds more than 1 percent of the weight of any food product. It works as an emulsifier in candy bars, keeping the cocoa and cocoa butter from separating. Soy lecithin also can be used in baking to make the dough less sticky and help it rise. It works as a so-called wetting agent, too, making cake mixes easier to spread into a pan when liquid is added

from that link you gave your two quotes are about the same thing, just two different words one without the A at the end. It's an oil that doesn't change the taste just stops two ingredients from seperating and as it's normally less than 1% it really wouldn't alter the taste.

Trust me - as someone who's worked in the food industry for over 10 years, I'm telling you that there's no difference between soy and soya lecithin, and changing between the two would not change the flavour of the product.

Honest. I promise :)

Well, according to the link that DaiNasty posted, they've got rid of the cocoa butter for a start, so that would definitely make a difference...

Anyway, as I understand it, UK chocolate tastes a lot nicer than that in the US - just get yourself here for some of ours :)

The only reason ours tastes better is we have more ingredients, so its actually less pure as it were.

I do like the taste of US chocolate but I also love 90% Dark choc and not a lot of people can stand the taste of that.

I can't believe they would get rid of cocoa butter, isn't that one of the main ingredients?

I dont know........ Maybe your tastes have changed. As me and others have posted info that Soy and Soya lecithin are the same thing and will not effect the taste as it is just an emulsifier to help some of the ingredients to bond together.

How many times are you going to mention the lecithin and be told soy and soya lecithin are the same and WILL NOT effect the flavour of the choc.

It is an emulsifier for holding together ingredients.

Peter_

Yes but that was in 2008... They changed to SOY LECITHIN in 2004 :(
Lecithin will not affect flavour in the small measures used all it does is act as an emulsifier and is not sweet to taste.

I worked for 10 years making cooking chocolate and it could be many factors including the use of whey powder instead of milk powder that will have more impact on the flavour.

The change in flavour will have been made purely on cost and not on for providing the same taste of the previous product to you the customer.

Many people here in the UK would have noticed a similar change in flavour when Nestle transferred KitKat production from England to Spain a few years back.

Awesome shop, ice cream bar, & café in San Francisco :)

I will try, I'm sure I could detect 3D drool when I was reading your post Maggy ;)

Both Aldi and Lidl do pretty good chocolate (and sweet stuff in general). I love my chocolate but like other posters have alluded to Hershey didn't quite do it for me (although if that was the only available.. :) ) if I had the choice I'd go for their own stuff - those Germans love their chocolate!
