Guys,

I would really appreciate if you guys could help me with this please.

I've upgraded from a 20mb Virgin connection to the 50mb connection this morning. Everything installed and worked fine so I have been out and gone in about an hour back.

The engineer checked the line this end and said everything was fine. However when he did the Virgin speed test (Login/password required) the modem would max out at around 28mbps which is not adequate now I have upgraded to a 50mb connection. I would point out on the 20mb connection I had full 20mb download speed. The engineer did say that there is something wrong but he simply didn't know what it is, he also said the local cable box is absolutely full with connections as they no longer take out the cables when customers disconnect.

I have tried plugging the modem directly into the computer and the speeds are still the same, around 28mbps. With the new Netgear router plugged in the speeds are the same. Upload speed is around 384kbps as per speed tests but it should be around 1.5mbps?

I'm running Vista 64 ultimate on all 3 of my machines so I believe I shouldn't have to change any settings in the registry etc. However, if there are any settings worth changing cane someone please let me know? I've seen the TCP Optimizer program mentioned alot but this only allows you to select up to 20mbps, also I am unsure if this would help in any way on Vista.

I have gone to http://192.168.100.1/ and the information is as follows:

Downstream power levels:
Power Level
(dBmV) 3.05 2.47 2.22 2.71
RxMER
(dB) 36.84 36.84 36.84 36.84

Upstream power levels:
Power Level
(dBmV) 36.25 N/A N/A N/A

I have tried speed tests to determine my speed via google and I've also tried downloading files from http://gamefiles.virginmedia.com/blueyondergames/demos/?C=S;O=D

Can anyone do anything for me please? I'm paying for 50mbps but am only getting half the speed that I am paying for.

Thankyou for all your help - I am in the B37 area of Bham.

Kind regards,

Matt

Can't really help with the speed problem but it's probably worth mentioning that you should not be using TCP Optimiser with Vista. TCP Optimiser manually configures fixed values for TCP settings but Vista needs them to remain dynamic because it changes its TCP settings on the fly. The two are not compatible.

I've seen numerous speed values from 50meg, but the upstream is usually solid and consistent - I've never failed to max it out.

Ensure all other traffic is stopped - windows update, torrent clients etc - and test again using http://speedchecker.org

These are my results from that site - http://speedchecker.org/?result=9831612956900f8519b2e71bea133995

Not aware of any faults on the Chelmsey Wood exchange so I would advise you to call in and speak to one of my colleagues on 0800 052 0431 this the 50Mb line not for any other customers.

Thanks for your help guys - I checked my download speed with that link and it did come up correct, however everywhere else (Including downloading from blue yonder) is no where near correct.

Posted on Virgins broadband newsgroup and got the following reply, glad I'm not going mad!

"Hi Matt,

I'm sorry this post was missed. There are errors showing on your downstream
which will be causing your slow speeds. I have raised this and am waiting on
a reference.

Problem still isn't sorted and VM have raised a new ticket after looking at a trace route to google saying it doesn't look right.
