no network

i currently use Virgin for my broadband.I use a Netgear WGR614 router and the adaptor that came with it.I am constantly losing my network connection whilst on the internet. I was advised to buy a Netgear WN111 adaptor. I installed the CD that came with it - everything went fine until i came to the final bit - locating a network .There was /is nothing in the drop down menu to choose from ,thus i cannot finish the installation.I am now back to the original adapter and this found the Netgear network immediately . I know nothing about the technical side of computing .I thought this would be a simple procedure. Can anyone help with my problem .Thanks

You need to log into 192.168.1.1 username virgin password password
go to wireless settings and change the channel, chances are it's set to ch6, change it to 1 or 11.
Channel changing can dramatically improve your connection,
