With 10 Mbit dropping to £20 (£14 with phone), 2Mbit at £18 would be an embarrasment (if it wasn't already!).

Maybe they will re-release it as "budget broadband" at a lower price if the idea that everyone should have access to 2Mbit ever comes to anything.

It had dropped to £17

And £9 with a phone line

It's true, I just used the ask before you buy tool on allyours.virginmedia.com and said where is M and the person replied that it has been discontinued. Will M customers be upgraded to L? Personally I think it is competition with sky as they are upping their BB by £5

BenMcr
04-02-2009, 22:44
No, BB L is between £3 (BB M standalone was £18, BB L standalone is now £21 before e-billing) and £5 more expensive (2 for £20/3 for £30 compared with 2 for £25/3 for £35) than BB M was , so there will be no free upgrades

I think I shall upgrade through self service and if I am charged £25 then I'll ring up as it should only be £21

BenMcr

It's their/your choice. If you are happy with the service, you can stay on it. AFAIK there will no forced migration off the 2Mbit tier (just as there was no forced upgrade from discontinued TV/Phone options)

If you want a faster speed, it is now slightly cheaper to upgrade than it was

I would phone up straight away. Selfcare and the existing customer bit of the allyours website are having a few 'issues' with the new prices

But I will say this for the 100th time, the new prices are achived through discounts, so BB L still shows as £25 on your bill

So this was what was meant by the 'everyone on 2MB would be 'upgraded' to 4MB after the 50MB rollout in 2009' rumour.

Very annoying to see the other tiers get a free upgrade..:(

Ben B

well I have just selfcared and instantly on 10mb hooray. Will ring tomorrow just to check everything is in order :)

When someone says '10Mbit will become the minimum speed for Virgin Media' but then gives no more details, unfortunately the wrong conclusion can be reached

It is no different that the 512Kb tier that was around for a couple of years. That ended up being completely orphaned (and there are still the odd few customers still on it!)

I am on a retentions deal until the end of the month. I think I will wait until then before I phone.

BenMcr
04-02-2009, 23:30
Won't make any difference. Retention deals don't expire, and if you are on one, the old full price differences apply

BB M to BB L on a Loyalty bundle = £7
BB M to BB XL on a Loyaly bundle = £19
BB L to BB XL on a Loyalty bundle = £12

unless a new bundle deal is agreed

I have just been reading through all these posts and I am totally bewildered by all the options. Surely, VM could have a much simpler tariff construction.I have BB L, TV XL and phone with anytime free calls all of which I am completely satisifed with ( apart from maybe having a few more HD channels), but I really don't know where I am with all these pricing options. Will I pay more?, should I upgrade? or more probable, should I defect to Sky?:confused::confused:

BenMcr

Not unless you change something

should I upgrade?
Only if you are not happy the the speeds you are currently getting

or more probable, should I defect to Sky?:confused::confused:
Why would this prompt a move to Sky, unless you aren't happy with something?

How so? 512K was the first broadband I ever had, back in the day (about 2002 or 2003 IIRC, in an ex-NTL area). During my time as a customer I got automatic upgrades to 600K, then 750K, and I would have had another one to 1Mb or 1.5 - I can't quite remember because I moved off-net at that point so I never got it.

So where did this unmoveable 512K tier come from? Is it the remnant of the 150K entry-level 'broadband' or is it an ex-Telewest product?

BenMcr
05-02-2009, 11:12
I think it was specifically introduced as a sub 1Mbit price point - to compete against the equivalent services on BT based services around at the time (2004/5)

It was 512k for £14.99, rather than the 1Mbit service (as was) for £17.99

It also allowed for a 3 for £30 when the 1Mbit service with TV/Phone was around £33

However with all the re-jigs in bundles and pricing that happened during the merger of ntl & telewest and then the rebrand it got discontinued

I think eventually there will probably be some clean up and anyone left on it will probably get some communication from Virgin to let them know it is being completely withdrawn.

Actually we were upgraded for free...:erm:

BenMcr

Depends what you mean by upgraded ;) For instance, you could have been moved from an old ntl bundle with 512Kbit that was £30 to a new Virgin Media one with 1Mbit that was also £30

However that would have included a tier change, rather than an upgrade of the existing tier

I'm on the 2Mb/s BB and it's been very stable.

I want to go for the upgrade to 10Mb/s but am nervous about how stable it will be. Are there any checks I can do beforehand that would give me an indication - eg. the modem signal levels? I have the silver ambit 120 modem.

If it turns out to be unstable I hope I can go back, but that would mean dealing with the efficient CS.

I'm considering maybe going for the upgrade too.
I currently have the 2mb broadband and medium phone, plus Talk international for £1 extra.

I pay £18 per month broadband and wouldnt mind upgrading to 10mb and paying less, £14 per month costing me £168 per year instead of the £216 I currently pay.

Is it as straight forward as calling up, saying I want to upgrade, and it's done?

Thanks.

BenMcr

What discounts do you currently get?

Halcyon
05-02-2009, 15:03
I don't get any discounts. As well as the £18 broadband I pay £11 for phone if I recall correctly.

BenMcr
05-02-2009, 15:10
The option you will probably be offered first will be 20Mbit + Phone M for £32 (£31 on e-billing) - a £2/£3 price increase for a broadband service that goes 10x faster

But as you have no discounts at the moment and it is only a £3 price decrease (its £26 if you don't have e-billing), you should also be able to get the BB L price too

hi,

i get BB Medium (2Mb), TV Large, Talk weekends, V+ box for £36/month.

i would like to upgrade to BB Large (10Mb).

how much will this cost per month?

i cant work it out.

Thanks!

BenMcr
05-02-2009, 15:49
It will costs you £5 more.

You are on the 3 for £30 (£31 when not on e-billing) + £5 for the V+ rental

You would be going onto the £3 for £35 (http://allyours.virginmedia.com/websales/product.do?id=11039) (£36 not on e-billing) + £5 for the V+ rental

Because if like me you already have Sky anyway, and are on 2 meg bb, then switching to Sky would save me £18/month.....

Perfect Choice

Upgraded myself to 10MB from 2MB in December, speed.io tests indicate I regularly get above 9MB so happy.

and is nowhere near as reliable. Great "upgrade" that is. But if you want a rock solid reliable connection then just leave it alone.

Indeed it would, however as the OP has all services with Virgin, that isn't really a valid comparison now is it. ;)

how much did you have pay for the upgrade, GeoffW?

I contacted CS by e-mail and explained what i wanted. They simply replied that BB L costs £21. so i presume they want to charge me £10 extra, compared to my BB M package.

i wont pay an extra £10 but £5 per month would have tempted me.

disappointed.

I was paying £18 for M, now paying £21 for L.

I tried to upgrade on self care and L was still £25, so I called them and went for ebilling.

So far so good.

You are best calling up Customer Services and speaking to someone direct rather than by email as you should get a better response from a person, use the numbers that I have provided below.

Call 150 from your Virgin Media Phone. It's absolutely free.

Or call 0845 454 1111 from any other phone line.

Can somebody help me im getting a bit confused.

Iv'e got TV=XL, BB=M and telephone with a £20 loyalty pack BB/phone/TVB discount at the moment im paying £18 for BB, am I right in thinking now I can get 10meg BB for £21 not £25, because I just rang and Virgin and thet said "no its £25" or am I just reading this thread wrong?

mcilwraith
07-02-2009, 12:07
Yes, at first i was told £21, but then i was told this was a mistake and its £25 for BB Large (10Mb).

So for new customers, its £15 for 6 months, then £20 per month.

But for us loyal customers (i've been with NTL/Virgin for 10 years) its £25 per month. Even although i also pay for phone, TV and V+!!

I am NOT happy and wont be taking it.

BenMcr
07-02-2009, 12:12
You are reading it wrong.

BB L will show as £25 on a bill no matter what price you pay, as the new prices are achieved through discounts. If you are on a Loyalty bundle standard price increases apply.

So BB M to BB L is £7 more

Just checked my bill as I am on BB-L (which was the middle tier) against the website.
I see I am now on the lower tier. Not a problem.
With discounts and bundle savings I pay slightly less than the advertised 'standard' price for the combined services.

Clarity was promised when everything moved to a single billing structure but it doesn't seem to have happened. Therefore, as can be seen from a quick scan of these forums, VM's pricing structure still causes confusion.

Isn't it about time they made it simple for everyone to understand their charges... Will they EVER sort it out.
