Morning chaps,

I have been having problems routing to some sites recently using my virgin cable line and wondered if it was just me or if others were having the problem too. A fairly major one would be paypal (which can access fine via proxy).

The only thing the trouble seems to coincide with is the downgrading speed after the free 10mb upgrade.

any ideas?

When you say having problems routing to certain sites, do the sites just not load, are they slow or something else?

yeah they hang after resolving, or connect sometimes 1 in 20, via web proxy, boom! straight up. Obviously I don't want to ssl via web proxy though.

can you get to paypal right now for example?, if so what dns you using?

At work at the moment and we connect through Enta and its working fine. I use Open DNS and never have a problem there. If it resolves correctly though, it may not neccesarily be a DNS issue.

I'd suggest performing a aracert to a website to which you can't connect, and posting the results here.

thats where it goes wrong....qwest.net....wtf is it doing routing over there?

what it seems to do is connect to paypal.com then tries to connect to paypalobjects.com where it goes into a long loop and eventually comes back with half a lo-fi paypal page!

odd, because the routing seems to go wrong far outside the VM network, maybe some BGP/IGP screw up or router failure.

I thought Qwest were quite a decent sized ISP, its not unreasonable to route through them to get to a site like Paypal (US based). If I do a tracert to Paypal.com, I also go through the same router at hop 11 (67.148.54.10) everything times aout after that. That is probably by design as a lot of network admins for large networks will configure their routers to drop ICMP echo packets (which tracert uses).
