Its not an ADSL router so you will have to link it up to an ADSL modem, im not sur ehow much virgin crippled the firmware though, so it might not work.

It should work with a standalone modem as Axegrinder said, all you need to do is use windows to connect up the wireless or log directly into the netgear config pages using a ethernet cable and the web address of 192.168.1.1 and the username of virgin and passphrase of the word password, then click on wireless settings and name the router and remove the black dots that are the existing passphrase and put your own in click apply, remove cable and connect to router wirelessly using your new router name and password.

It's the property of VM, so I guess you'd have to give it back if you ever moved to a new ISP

im sure they are not property of vm the stb's are but not the routers and im not cancelling just giving it to the mother in law

The router does stay the property of Virgin and they can request its return.

...the Wireless router remains the property of Virgin Media at all times.

at the end of the 'not so small print' (http://allyours.virginmedia.com/html/internet/wireless.html)

v0id, very interesting that yours says that, I have just examined mine all over and it is devoid of such a warning - perhaps there are a couple of versions out there. The only mention my WGR614 router has it that the default username is virgin and the firm ware appears to be locked to a vgik version despite a number of attempts to upgrade to a newer version.

I'd expect my mothers Virgin Media cable modem to remain properety of Virgin Media, but not the wireless routers they were 'selling' and i subsequently purchased second hand.
