It all started about a week ago , whilst surfing the net i lost connection .

i rang Virgin they gave me the usual patter and after a while the lights on my modem did come on but my browser still wouldnt connect to the net .

I think it was due to installing service pack 3 .

Last night i plugged in my other pc to the router/ modem and i coudl connect ( so its defintley the pc ) the only difference i could see is that the new pc has a DNS ip address whilst my doesnt .

All my settings are obtain automaticaly which is axs it should be

also my network connect says : Assigned by DHCP and all the ip address are that of my router .

Last night i tried but to still no avail the browsers still failed i couldnt ping a ip for google nor could i ping the domain name.

Then all of a sudden "steam" chat connected also windows update and NOD32 . MSN , Web browsers still wont connect.

If you need any more info let me know

Could be redirection malware...

Try using opendns.com settings. It sounds like name resolving isn't working if other networking operations are OK.

Try pinging 212.58.224.138

I had a customer last night who could browse fine then couldn't. ipconfig /all showed her dns servers set to 4.2.2.2 nd 4.2.2.1
Set them to obtain auto and browsing resumed. The customer had never seen the numbers before and no idea how they got there, so I advised anti-virus and spyware scans as something had to have changed the settings.

that's the level 3 DNS. Customer probably had someone else set up the connection and was unaware.

tinit, so what happens when you ping googles IP? does it timeout? and when you try ping google.co.uk does it timeout or do you get 'could not find host'? If it's the latter what does nslookup google.co.uk give you?

Try tracert 212.58.224.138 (the bbc) or a trace to the google IP you are using.

When i ping google ip it times out and when i ping the domain it says cant find host

nslookup google.co.uk - is that i command i need to type in the cmd screen ?

im not at home to do it but will update yous with waht happens tonight .

----------------------

The only thing i can tell taht differs between my pc that doesnt connect and another one tht does is even though they both have automatic seetings marked in the TCP IP properties , the one that works seems to have an ip range in the DNS section . i will try to clarify if that makes no sense . i have put the range into my pc but still doesnt work

Joxer

So in the black command prompt type nslookup bbc.co.uk and paste the result here.

Did you try to ping or tracert the IP address (e.g. 212.58.224.138) rather than the name?

when i do a ipconfig /all or look at network connection details

192.168.0.1 ( my router ip ) is in as dns server dhcp server and default gateway is this corect ? coz when i do it on this pc it isnt the case on this pc the dns server is differnt to the rest , it has an 85 address

Joxer
15-01-2009, 22:12
OK in that case either something is blocking your DNS requests in which case it is most likely a firewall issue, or you DNS is just broke. Most likely the former, especially since pinging IP addresses is also failing.

Then again I wouldn't rule out the router - I had a similar issue on one PC I could ping anything OK but couldn't get any web pages, three other machines (all four wired) worked ok - it's this machine obviously, I thought to myself and spent hours trying to find out what to no avail. Resetting the router (using the reset button on the back) fixed it.

That wasn't there when I started typing!!!

That is correct and is "this" PC the one that isn't working or the one that is cos you are posting from it?

i have NOD32 disabled , windows firwewall off . yet cant be the router as this pc is in it for now so i can access the net .

:(i noticed in the advanced settings of TCP IP this machine has use automatic selcted as does my other one but under DNS advance setting this one has the ip address tht show up in ipconfig all , where as the other machine doesnt have any settings and shows up as the routers ip address . ( both say use automatic settings )

Joxer
15-01-2009, 22:20
I think you need to set the advanced settings to whatever the other one has - don't use windows so don't ask me how to do this - fell free to do it here though, just don't expect me to reply. :)

That should solve the DNS issue but the non pinging of IP addresses is still worrying.

yet cant be the router as this pc is in it for now so i can access the net .

You didn't actually read what I said. 4 PCs 1 router 3 worked 1 didn't. reset router fixed it.

Joxer

Come to think of it if nslookup fails when specifying the server then what I said before holds.

Worth a go, ina command promt type::

ipconfig /flushdns
netsh int ip reset ip.txt
netsh winsock reset

Actually the first one might do it - try it first, the others require a reboot.

Mags suggested the third one, don't know if you tried it though.

I haven't bothered reading through all the previous posts but if you think it is a settings problem and you know when the problem started, try doing a system restore and knock your pc back a couple of days.

Can you post the DNS ip address that starts with 85? It looks like a DNS hijack that you may have.

tinit
16-01-2009, 10:17
the DNS ip that is 85 is on the machine that works so thats not the case .

I had a problem with my router sometime ago,ntl at the time changed the IP address and it screwed over my router. took me a week to figure out I had a reset button on the router and after holding it down for 30 seconds all the lights flashed and not sure what it does, resets everything I think.

But it worked fine. since then its happend the odd time and each time I just do the same thing and its ok then.

I assume you have tried connecting to the net direct from the modem its self rather than the router?

Joxer
16-01-2009, 23:00
Well it would appear that steeam chat connects to an IP rather than domain, which is slightly odd, or possibly does it's own dns cacheing.

Out of interest could you post the output from:
tracert 194.168.4.100
tracert 212.58.224.138

Either way, I'd try direct to the modem (remember to reboot it) If that works OK reset the modem, if not a system restore is in order.
