Hello all I've browsed these forums for a while now and can see you all are very helpful. I finally came to make an account :)

Ok I have two problems, the first is regarding my PING level, here is a result from two speed tests:

http://speed.io/pics/1542/5205/speed.io.png (http://www.speed.io)

https://www.cableforum.co.uk/images/local/2009/01/33.png (http://www.speedtest.net)

As you can see it is very high and I'm worrying about it. I am on 20mb virgin internet and I have the small black internet modem. This computer also has the netgear router from virgin media connected to it so the main internet source is this computer.

Here are my signal levels:

Downstream Lock : Locked
Downstream Channel Id : 7
Downstream Frequency : 331000000 Hz
Downstream Modulation : QAM256
Downstream Symbol Rate : 5360.537 Ksym/sec
Downstream Interleave Depth : taps32Increment4
Downstream Receive Power Level : 3.4 dBmV
Downstream SNR : 40.8 dB

Upstream Lock : Locked
Upstream Channel ID : 3
Upstream Frequency : 34000000 Hz
Upstream Modulation : QPSK
Upstream Symbol Rate : 2560 Ksym/sec
Upstream transmit Power Level : 53.0 dBmV
Upstream Mini-Slot Size : 2

Also to add I am in Swansea.

My other problem is that my connection sometimes will turn to local only which is annoying while I'm browsing or on an online game I get disconnected and have to shut down the entire computer and also turn off the mains then re load computer to make the connection become local and internet. I am on windows vista ultimate.

Thanks :)

Well it is a bit high - so we need to find out why.

Open a command prompt: Start - all programs - accesories - command prompt and the try these:

ping 192.168.1.1 (the router)
ping 192..168.100.1 (the modem)
ping bbc.co.uk (the bbc :) )

Don't type the bits in brackets.

I bet you're using opera browser :) opera doesn't play well with flash, do what Joxer said and we'll see if there's a problem other than poor flash interperatation

I dont know about everyone else but i think your upstream power level is bordering on being too high. You should keep an eye on it and see if it goes above 53.

Ping times to the bbc are ok so I think the speed test might be off on that one.
Umm must have got the router address wrong if you type ipconfig into the command prompt window the line that says default gateway will give the correct address.

OK so either you didn't get that router from VM or you have been messing about with the settings. Looks more like an Apple airport or Cisco router.

It's deffinatly from Virgin, the only thing I changed on the router is the security option to WEP so that I could work my nintendo DS on wifi as it woulden't work with the defult settings.

as far as im aware its not a good thing to change a VM Router from WPA to WEP as it comes defaulted to WPA for customers to set up easyer

Who installed and configured the router for you?

Interesting choice of IP address ;)

I'm sorry but I don't mean too double post ><
Anyway I set the router back to it's defult settings but the connection would be local only so I had to set it back to the settings I had been using =/
