Looking for a home safe.

Going to be keeping Mrs M to be's valuables in it, my laptops when I'm out of the house, and the usual household and personal documents.

Anybody bought one of these?

Ideally I'd like one that's fire-resistant, but they don't seem to do them in a suitable format for laptops. Conversely the laptop ones generally aren't fire-resistant. It doesn't need to be a specialist laptop one, but it does need to protect documents etc in the event of fire.

Something with a decent rating that will help with insurance costs would be nice as well.

Money probably not too much of an object, as I'm hoping it will pay for itself in lowered insurance costs, but nothing too silly obviously.

Thanks :)

Stupid question, but whats to stop someone stealing the safe? (unless they are huge obviously)

Normally bolted to the floor or a wall - with the fixings only available from the inside of the safe - they'd need to open the safe to remove it.

I used to keep money in something like this (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Tobar-Combination-Money-Box-Safe/dp/B000WU0V4S/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=toys&qid=1227980142&sr=8-1) many years ago...

Not sure the insurance company would approve, thanks though :)

I've used Sentry Firesafes... tucked away in odd places where they are less liable to be found, and where they would be recoverable after a fire.

Don't have any valuables any more though :dozey:

Shop around as prices vary a lot!!

Costco are doing a large fireproof safe for around £170 + VAT IIRC. Happy to check it out and get more details next time I go if that helps.

Have a look in yellow pages for a safe company and give them a ring...
I have bought two second hand safes that way, each was about £150.
They are bolted to the floors they are standing on but thats not really necessary as they are so heavy that two big blokes needed to carry them in (with great difficulty) once their doors had been removed!
The safes are fireproof and insured for up to (iirc)£5000 cash.

I bought one from here (http://www.safeoptions.co.uk/sotn/category.php?xDep=599) - you need a fire data safe if you want the laptop or any digital media to be protected as well as documents.

I chose a fairly small one as I only need to store my external HDD which has my backups, along with jewellery, docs, etc. Very pleased with the service. The Phoenix models offer a free replacement safe in the event of fire damage to the existing unit.

A lidded kids' play sand tray in the garden with lots of plastic bags for the valuables to go in. :)

I got mine from HERE (http://http://www.argos.co.uk/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Search?storeId=10001&langId=-1&q=SAFES&pp=20&c_1=1|cat_10198728|Security|10198856), make sure it's insurance company approved. I got the £49.99 one.

Right - the safe Costco is selling is as follows:

Sentry Biometric Fire Safe - 1.2 cu ft capacity, 1 hr fire resistant (UL rated), water resistant, swipe finger/code operated (not sure if there is a key override in case of battery failure), bolt fixing kit inlcuded.

£169.99 + VAT last time I was there 2 weeks ago.

It looks like this one (although I think it has a 1 hr rating not 2hr):
