Any bright sparks out there, can someone tell me if there is such a thing as a recession proof job? I only ask because with a down turn in the economy I was wondering who will be the winner and losers here and if you are unfortunate to loose you job what next to go into. Even some of our premiership footballers are not immune from the economic down turn as she of them who would last year have commanded 70K a week can only get 50K this year, poor things.

Based on a rough and dirty guide (no scienctific theory here) here are my top five:

Gold bullion trader/dealer = business booming

Drug dealer = demand is constant unaffected by economy

Pawn shop owner = demand rising

Police man/woman = work load increasing

Doctor – as more people are being signed off looking for work/ depressed etc

Below the line ones you think should be doing well:

Prostitutes – in economic downturns more women/ men turn to the world’s oldest profession, therefore forces the price down. Its no help that many of their regular customer base (leave the bankers alone :dmonk:) are loosing their jobs .

Any ideas!!

Those working in the take away sector normally do quite well in a recession.

Taxi Driver - In really bad times people can't afford to run cars but still need to get around or go out

Politician – Yes that should have been top of my list, one of the few industries where during a recession they can still vote themselves a pay rise, for doing even less.

Civil Servants – No, due to the amount of outsourcing going on and wide spread cuts across Whitehall, some of which doesn’t make much sense. Typically, its always a junior civil servants that always take the blame when things go wrong, but a Minister or Senior Civil servant or that takes credit when things go well.

House rental agencies around here are booming..

Increasing numbers of people can't or won't commit to a mortgage and folks that can't seel their houses are putting them up for rent.

I've a couple of friends in that line of business who say things have never been better.

Considering it's my families predominant occupation I'm hoping the legal profession will be kept occupied.

Chief Executive of the FSA must be the safest job in the world. I mean Hector Sants is still there despite all the FSA's massive failings.

Now, there's a point. An entire 'regulated' industry teeters on the brink of collapse after being allowed to carry on business in a highly reckless manner ... and the regulator gets off scott-free. Looks like Hector is pretty much bomb-proof. Unlike many of the people he was meant to be regulating. :erm:

Plus on the news this morning there was a piece about how the FSA were going to expand in order to regulate more aggressively and to bring in the best talent the wages paid would be increased a fair bit.

Sounds like rewarding failure to me, and I thought the government were going to be stopping that.
