View Full Version : Giganews Speeds

Was wondering if anyone else had seen some performance issues with Giganews?

No matter how many threads I tried, no matter what I did, last night I couldn't get above 15Mbit.

Also noteworthy was that on my little trace I could see TCP Window adjustments

Switched the NNTP client off, did a speed test an immediately full 20Mbit. Tried the Giganews speed test, 8Mbit.

Anyone else seen this, struggling to think it's an issue with Giganews, it affected both news.giganews and news-europe.

Maybe you could try using port 80 or 23 for your giganews, just in case.

I'm on Giganews - can't remember the name, some kind of precious metal (20 connections SSL - unlimited package).

I switched to from Usenetserver in search of better retention, i obviously got that, but as long as i'm not under traffic management it maxes the bandwidth every time. I never got this with Usenetserver, but i was blaming it on VM.

Giganews really is worth the extra $

(no i don't work for them)

Nah see above I also tried the Giganews (HTTP based) speedtest.

I think more likely it's down to asymmetrical routing and problems along the route, or likely capacity issues on the route as I tried it just after the end of the STM period when people are likely to kick off their downloads. Downside of limiting for part of the day, it just moves the congestion period.

See first post:

Anyone else seen this, struggling to think it's an issue with Giganews, it affected both news.giganews and news-europe.

I suspect news.giga has become an anycast address as it routes to Amsterdam also, and is therefore subject to the same asymmetrical routes:

Gonna try it again just after STM is cleared at 9pm and see if I see the same issues.

Could you guys who are seeing good performance post a traceroute please?

I am on the ex-Telewest network, I was wondering if one of you guys on ex-ntl could post the reverse traceroute from Giganews' European server?

For the bored technical people it looks as though Virgin Media are frigging with routing or have yet more routing problems, Giganews sits on AS 30094 and peers directly with ntl's AS 5089 at Amsix - hence the return patch being that way, however in London VM are preferring to transit AS 22822 - LLNW.net - for outbound traffic.

I have been having similar issues, I am on Virgin 20Mb and have an unlimited Giganews account, I live in the Wigan area.

On Tuesday evening I was getting a lot of really bad packet loss no matter what I was connecting to.

Since then I have only been able to download between 700 and 800 kbytes / sec

The only advantage is that my connection hasnt been dropping to 300 kbytes/ sec when the traffic shaping should have kicked in.

Same speeds to both US and EU Giganews servers.

Virgin Have deff changed something

I have had no issues with my 20meg broadband until around 5 days ago (making it around 5~6th Oct), no matter what time of day it is, I cannot get above 4meg/6meg on both news-europe.giganews.com and news.giganews.com... on a 20meg service, it is starting to irritate me.

I had no problems with Giganews however I just switched to Astraweb 160 day retention 99% complete 20 connections ssl and the dsl max is on offer fro $11 a month. It maxes my connection most of the time its only slower when VM are the cause so far
