View Full Version : Virgin cable speed!

Hi ev1

I had virgin cable installed on Tuesday. The guy who installed it couldn't get to connect because it was going so slow, so I rang virgin tech & they connected me but I am getting about 35kbps!!!!!!!!! He told me that there was something wrong with my computer & to get someone out to have a look. Great, first encounter with virgin!!!!!

I rang again later that day & the tech guy said he thought my avg was causing the problem & told me to uninstall it, then re-install it again, that didn't work.

Thing is if I leave pc & router off for a few hours I get 9875kbps for about 5 minutes, then it goes down to 76kbps (or something like that), think I'm lucky to even get on the internet with that speed.

I've just come from BT whose speeds were slow but NOT this slow.

Could there be anything wrong with my pc? I have Intel pentium 4 2.80ghz processor, 1gb ram, am running windows xp sp3.

I have done the modem configuration thingy :erm:that I saw on another post.

Downstream Receive Power Level : 2.2 dBmV
Downstream SNR : 40.5 dB

Please can someone help me? I cannot afford to have someone come out to look at my pc. It runs alright, I don't have a problem with the actual comp, it's the flippin internet.

Thanks in anticipation.

What is the Upstream power level.

I know how you feel m8, I have same problems, on my 2mb service, but my dad has been with ntl/virgin for over 10 years so it just happened recently 2008, it wont be ur PC you could try resetting your router, but Idout it is that, its vm they are doing it, they only do it for 2mb as far as I know, I have 2mb and 10mb in different locations, the 10mb never goes that bad, but the 2mb has gone worse than yours, like max 700bytes/second, cudnt even listen to a track on youtube

Same here libby as per the other thread...ive changed channel of the router, even changed computer, all to no avail, like the guy above says, cant even listen to a youtube track without waiting 5 mins for it to load first. its insane

Try reseting the router when on, not in the config screen but with the small reset button on the underside. Just a thought as its worked in the past for me.

Hi whydoi

Upstream is:
Upstream Frequency : 25800000 Hz
Upstream Modulation : QAM16
Upstream Symbol Rate : 2560 Ksym/sec
Upstream transmit Power Level : 40.0 dBmV
Upstream Mini-Slot Size : 2

That upstream level is fine.

Maybe its possible oversubscription on your UBR.

Both sets of power levels are spot on the problem must be elsewhere, as Axegrinder said it may be an issue with over subscription on your connection to the uBR in your area.

Are you on XP if so go to start>run>write cmd in the run box and click OK>when the black DOS screen appears write > netstat -an and click enter then look to see if you have any established connections and any listening connections and list the amount on here.

Your netstat -an seems a bit inconclusive with all the close waits but not many listening or established connections.

Have you tried running Adaware 2008 link here http://lavasoft.com/products/ad_aware_free.php

or Spybot Search and Destroy link here http://www.safer-networking.org/en/spybotsd/index.html

I know how it feels to have a slow connection.

I only seem to have had at most 10Mb download speed, even though I paid for the maximum speed for a couple of months.

I downgraded to BB size L from XL when I discovered the even the addition of draft wireless "N" standard equipment doesn't help!

I've got used to the 10Mb again, but I'd still hate to be plagued with this problem when VM upgrades the system to 50Mb and I can't take advantage!

Have you tried just using the modem & cutting out the router? - See if it makes any difference?

Also are you wired or wireless to the router/modem?

Can you post a Tracert?

Hi WhydoI

I have spyeware terminator & a-squared, would downloading 2 more spyware programmes help any? As for the netstat information - I don't know what any of it means anyway. I just have no clue what's wrong with this ****** comp/internet.

LUBE - If you have 10MB connection then I don't understand what your complaint is!!!!!!!!!

D. CASEY - I am using wired connection. I only have a router, no modem! What is Tracert?

Surely somene on this earth must know what is wrong!!!!!!! Today when I started up I got really high speeds for about half an hour, longer than ever before. So what is happening to slow down to 57KBPS??????

Try the Spybot and see if it names any infections then list them here.

You could try this below as you are on XP.

TCP Optimiser is actually on the Virginmedia website click on this link and read about it.

http://www.virginmedia.com/help/20mb-broadband-optimisation.php

Then the link to the Speedguide site

www.speedguide.net.

Or the link direct to the Optimiser.

Hi Why

I installed spybot + updates & ran a scan. It found 3 problems: 1 adware entry = Zango.shoppingreport & 2 hitbox tracking cookies.

I will try the other links that you have suggested.

I have some additional information which might make some kind of sense to you. If I switch the router on without putting the comp on & leave it for half an hour (the usual time internet takes to slow down), I actually get high speeds for the half an hour before speed goes down. However, if I do the reverse (switch comp on first & wait for half an hour before switching router on), I get slow speed straight away.

Thanks

Any luck with other tech members? I have phoned Virgin again & they are sending me a new router, but I don't think that's the problem.

You should get a PM asking for contact details from the Tech.

I'm sure this isn't the problem, but a while back my CMs dhcp service was offering a very very small MTU, some types of traffic couldn't get through it at all and others were just plain slow. (I first noticed something was wrong when I couldn't ssh through it).

Setting it manually and removing interface-mtu from the request list in dhclient fixed it.

This may be difficult to look at or set in your router.

Could be worth looking at though.

Problem fixed - yyiiiippppppppeeeeeeeeee!!!!!!!

It was the network card, it must have been dodgy. Strange behaviour, I thought they either worked or didn't, but now we know.

Thank you to ev1 who has tried to help me especially WhydoI.
