Evening All :)

Myself and Mrs-M-To-Be desperately need a holiday, but can't afford a long break somewhere nice.

I'm thinking that we could have a weekend break somewhere, but as it's probably going to be the only holiday we get this year it needs to be somewhere really nice.

Anybody got any good suggestions? If possible I'd like a nice relaxing location, a great hotel, and I don't have a lot of money to pay for it. If I could just book it all as one package it would make life much easier, but I'm not worried if I have to book the elements seperately.

Well do you want activity or relaxation?Pampering or roughing it?Scenic or urban?

Not sure really, relaxation would probably be best although it would be nice to have something to do (maybe some sightseeing or theatre or something like that). No roughing it please :) Scenic or urban would be nice, I quite like pottering around London in the evenings, but we're equally happy in the countryside.

where are you travelling from if you are in the north then the lake district is good, if you are in the south somewhere like Bath, oxford or stratford is good for a couple of days

The Lake District is lovely.

Mrs D & I went there on a "mini-moon" after the wedding (real honeymoon will be next year). Took maybe 3 hours to drive to Windermere.

As people have said, it depends what you want.

Barnard Castle is a market town in County Durham with nice countryside & several attractions in & around.

Bowes Museum (http://www.barnardcastle.com/), Raby Castle / High Force (http://www.rabycastle.com/high_force.htm),

Can highly recommend Number 34 (http://www.number34.com/index.htm) for accommodation...

I can recommend the wild beauty of the Northumberland coastline though at this time of year maybe the temperature may not suit.:)

I hope you mean Stratford upon avon - rather than just stratford :)

how about the new forest? - we stayed there a few years ago - if you're interested I can try and dig out the name of the hotel we stayed at - it was quite nice.

The last 'memorable' hotel I stayed in was called the Speech House Hotel in the middle of the Forest of Dean

http://www.thespeechhouse.co.uk/

the 4 poster bed was awesome & could have slept 5 people - I nearly needed a ladder ;) & the food was really good :)

Bit pricey at standard tariff, but you may be able to negotiate cheaper through a booking agency such as laterooms???

Or the Isle of Wight is rather nice...:)

Barnard Castle? :erm: Boring! :D

I live about 2 minutes from there and i don't think it's worth travelling for tbh.

I third the New Forest especially at this time of year, well worth the travel down from where I am. Best time is the crisp mornings, makes the place feel even more better.

I suspect there is an element of that. familiarity breeds contempt. I live in manchester I would urgently dissuade anyone from *ever* coming to this grotesue dump for any sort of leisure break. But that's because it really *is* a dangerous, crime-ridden dump, it's nothing to do with familiarity. Someone else got stabbed here today, it's a daily occurence, it must be in the running for most dangerous place in Britain.

It is just a case of, like with any other city, you need to know where not to go.

We seem to be disagreeing over towns, tonight ;)

The only thing that would put me off, is the weather right now - it's miserable when it's raining... we spent the best part of a day in a car sitting there waiting for it to stop raining

Well, it's a nice village, sure...But there's nothing there, Bowes is okay (as exciting as most other museums), the grounds are nice, that's about it.... but there are soooo many better places to go in the UK than Barny.

Took this pic of the front of the museum there in May, keeps the gardeners busy. :D Not v.good quality sorry

New England.

Worth every penny.

It has a few urban parts that you might like too?

Meant to say - it's/soon fall there... and a great time to visit. Spectacular umm foliage - if you like that kind of thing. And it has a LOT of history.
Whale-spotting is just up the road, in US terms, too.

If you can stretch to it Prague is good (according to the neighbours).
