Hi,

I just rang customer services and got them to send me a free router as i said i would downgrade my 20meg to 2meg if they didnt :)

My question is is it possible to put custome firmware onto this router ? (i.e. DD-WRT) or the other one called orange i beleive ?

Any Suggestions or anyone managed it ?

Also is the router capable of handling full 20meg ?

Cheers,

Impz

p.s. sorry if this has been asked before but i did a search and couldnt find anything.

The router can handle 20meg.
The firmware is locked, if you do somehow manage to flash new firmware on it then becomes unsupported if you call in with any problems.

i have never rang VM tech support i am clued up enough to fix my own problems the only time i would need them is if i had an issue with my line / UBR

so any idea if it can be flashed ? do you know what the model number of the router is ? a netgear ....... ???

It's a Netgear WGR614v6 or v9.
I had 3 of these routers and they couldn't be flashed,
3rd line Netgear tried and couldn't.

It has embedded firmware that even Netgear cannot bypass, and as moaningmags said you will invalidate your 2 year warranty if you manage to do it.

i aint fussed about the warranty. Will see what the VM software is like. as long as i get my full 20meg through it i will prob just leave it be !

do the routers not still 'belong to VM' meaning you aren't allowed to flash them even if you could?

i would assume if you flash it then you would be liable to pay for it as the equpiment is still VM's at the end of thr day, i suppose sticking differnet firmware on the router would be akin to hacking the cable modem

if you are that concerned why not just buy a router or was it a case of its free so i will complain until i get one?

The Virgin router has embedded virgin specific firmware and if you try to flash you will either fail or kill it.

If you want a router that you can flash then buy this from PC World order online for this price and pick up in store.

Sorry to resurrect an ancient thread, but thought this may be of use. It is possible to upgrade the virgin wgr614v6. Upgrading the wgr614v6 (http://computing.orwho.com/2009/05/15/upgrading-firmware-on-wgr614v6-from-virgin-media/)

No as it has embedded Virgin firmware onboard and even Netgear will not support this router and will refer you back to Virgin, you can try but you will probably brick it and Virgin will not replace it as you invalidated the warranty.

You see these on Ebay and little do the people buying them realise that the is no support for the router if it develops a fault.:D

I hate to jump in, but, to the best of my limited knowlege, I believe that Virgin routers are WGR614v9's not WGR614v6's. the v6's are an earlier model, and use netgears own firmware, and are therefore, flashable.

My router from virgin is a v6. I'm sure they are not the only routers offered by virgin. The V6 can be flashed if telnet is used to change the routers board ID as is shown on this site: WGR614v6 (http://computing.orwho.com/2009/05/15/upgrading-firmware-on-wgr614v6-from-virgin-media/)
I put the standard firmware on to it in this way. It's still a crappy router though.

We used both models and the Virgin v6 should have the same firmware as the v9 all are now v9.
