Too fast, not too slow!

I am on the 10MB service. Since yesterday afternoon according to Speedtest.net (but confirmed by other speed measuring tools) I have been receiving downloads varying between 13mb and 24mb. My upload speed has been reduced to about 280kb.

According to the modem configuration I am correctly set for 10MB and 512KB. Anyone any idea what is happening here?

could be the cache on these sites clean your internet temp files and then download 2files from gamefiles.blueyonder.co.uk and add your transfer rate or post here so we can see

Try this below for a more accurate insight to what your speed actually is.


If you are a Virgin Media customer then the best speedtest is from the link below which is from a dedicated server within the Virgin Media network, hence the is no www. before the address.

Have you tried going to this link to check your speeds http://gamefiles.virginmedia.com/

click on blueyondergames>demos>then click on at least 2 large files and save them to your desktop, and then wait a couple of minutes then write down the transfer rates on the files that are running> times them by 8 and you will get a truer download speed.

This does indeed give a much slower speed - last time I tried only 6.8mb - but the higher speeds reported by Speedtest and others certainly reflect a faster surfing experience in the last 24 hrs, once up as high as 27mb and typically in the 13-18mb range. There is certainly something unusual going on.

Incidentally the link above is much slower since I installed the Kaspersky security suite. Previously it was 8.6 - 9.2mb.

Speedtest using Gamefiles downloading 4 x 500 Mb+ files at once, I get over 2.5Mbps, which when multiplied by 8 gives me my 20Mb connection.

So which is more accurate?

1.9 mbit on a 2mbit connection. I'll settle for that :)

You are not going to believe this Chris190 but the answer it came up with is 48.48Mb - yes, 48.48! I have recorded a similar speed using Speedtest.net. I am still looking for an explanation.

I have just downloaded Ubuntu Desktop from the Virgin server using Seamonkey. The download started at 18.57 and finished at 19.08. According to Seamonkey the download speed was about 1200 K/sec. What does this tell us?

Do as post #4 says download 4 files better to go down to the Fs, save to your desktop and let them run for a few minutes, then add the 4 transfer rates together and multiply by 8 which will give your speed in Mb.

700mb in 12 minutes is about right. The maths does add up.
