Hi,

Today i have upgraded to the 20mbit from the 2mbit on speed tests it says the avarage is about 14mbit when i download from microsoft i get 10mbit i cant do the things it says on the vm website as i have vista not xp and they say the tweaks on xp dont make much difference with vista, so if i disconnect my router Belkin N1 i read on other threads this helps but when i disconnect the router and plug through ethernet to the modem only the internet does not work at all how can i make it work with just the modem? ispends ages identifying then says local only

TIA

Test 1: 1024K took 431 ms = 2375.9 KB/sec, approx 19577 Kbps, 19.12 Mbps
Test 2: 1024K took 427 ms = 2398.1 KB/sec, approx 19760 Kbps, 19.3 Mbps
Test 3: 1024K took 427 ms = 2398.1 KB/sec, approx 19760 Kbps, 19.3 Mbps
Test 4: 2048K took 2547 ms = 804.1 KB/sec, approx 6626 Kbps, 6.47 Mbps

Overall Average Speed = approx 16431 Kbps, 16.05 Mbp

I wonder why the router slows it down so much

www.speedtest.net (http://www.speedtest.net) and www.speedtest.bbmax.co.uk (http://www.speedtest.bbmax.co.uk) are 2 that I use.

I only use them to get an idea of how my connection is performing.

Check your router has the latest firmware on it. That can improve reliability.

I'm always sceptical of speed tests. Many will be affected by general internet congestion, rather than just our local bandwidth issues. Worst, many just do not use large enough files for the downloads at the higher speeds to stablise. You'll often get a more accurate measure by downloading a decent size application from a Virgin Media based server.

Most of the time you won't be able to max out your 20mb connection with a single download, also the file sizes used by most speed test sites aren't enough to fully test your connection - they can spend more time establishing a connection than actually transferring the file. The best way to test download speeds properly is with multiple concurrent connections to a good source and monitoring how much bandwidth you're using.

Yes.
See your router website on upgrading firmware.
Or just google it ;)

If you do choose to ditch your router, I'd gladly take it off your hands lol!

I find that my own PC hard wired through my router ( D-Link 524 ) gets 20Mb and my daughters wireless laptop gets around 7Mb using a 54Mbps router, if we needed better speeds for her laptop I would look towards getting a 125Mbps router, maybe that could be what you require.

I'm sure I've read somewhere that the TCP optimiser doesn't make any difference on Vista, I've just spent 30mins browsing trying to find the link but so far no luck, personally I'd uninstall it. If anyone does know the link please can you post it, thanks.

You could try this below if you are on XP it is not compatible with Vista

Then the link to the Speedguide site

www.speedguide.net.

Or the link direct to the Optimiser.

http://www.speedguide.net/downloads.php

FAQ link http://www.speedguide.net/faq_in.php?category=100

How do I uninstall the TCP Optimizer ? http://www.speedguide.net/images/spacer_01.gif The SG TCP Optimizer does not need to be installed or uninstalled. . In order In order to remove it completely from your system, simply delete the executable file TCPOptimizer.exe and that's it. Note you might also want to delete any backup files you created with it (with .spg extension) from its directory.

The program does not copy any file in any Windows (http://www.speedguide.net/faq_in_q.php?category=100&qid=46#) directory, and it does not appear in the "Add/Remove Programs" section of Control Panel.

Note: To revert any changes made to your system using the TCP Optimizer, go in its "File" pull-down menu (http://www.speedguide.net/faq_in_q.php?category=100&qid=46#)

Druchii

It's the router.

Wireless will indeed slow your connection down as well. Try a cable to the router if that's possible, if not, look for a new router. You could try a Linksys WRT54G.

Nicosia
15-06-2008, 10:59
thanks so much everyone for your help i will probably buy a router that handles the 20meg speeds, any recomendations on a good router that will take the speeds? and roughly how much will it cost? maybe the Linksys WRT54G as oliver said, the results look good i need one with wireless but the ntl modem doesent let me link more then 1 pc otherwise i would use just that

15-06-2008, 12:43
try here see if any of them look good

turns out it is not the router that is the problem.. i plugged in the ethernet port and now.... its full 20megs i did notthink that connecting by wireless would make me lose 10mbit the router is right here next to me :S

more likely its the wireless in the laptop that cant handle the speed, i use a belkin N1 usb adapater and dlink 635 N router and easily hit 20meg on wireless

Nicosia
16-06-2008, 12:22
weird! well ill just stick to ethernet the router has more then 1 port so its ok i was sure it was the router i dident thin for a second it could be the wireless from my lap top, never mind, thanks to everyone who helped and posted some very helpfull links :-)
