Hey Guys/Gals

I'm currently just finshed my first year of uni and moving in to the second year house in 2 weeks with 5 mates, I do Computer Networks and put myself in charge of the internet!

At home I've had NTL since it was 128k! god that was fast! and when we started talking about moving in to a house I thought GREAT 20meg Virgin!!!

But..

All this traffic shaping is putting me off! At the end of the day looking at the figures on the front pages each person gets!

10am-3pm // 1 gig
4pm-9pm // 500meg!

That in my eyes sucks, at the end of the day I don't want my mates coming up to me and saying Oi, I'm paying £X for 20meg and the internet sucks!

I can see us hitting this limit very fast! because of youtube, the mass facebook surfing we do!

So do you think its worth it? I'm 50/50 atm!

I also love on the front page how it states you can still watch 538 hours of bbc iplayer! it doesn't however say how many hours you can watch when your being watched! when your most likely to watch it!

I'd advise you to look at Be* 24Mb ADSL2+ broadband... www.bethere.co.uk (http://www.bethere.co.uk)

Check with neighbours what kind of speeds you'll get, or visit www.samknows.com (http://www.samknows.com) for a brief outline.

Hi rootdogg

As i understand traffic shaping comes into action after downloading 6Gb between 10am-3pm and after downloading 3Gb between the hours of 4pm-9pm. Once traffic shaped your speed will decrease to 5mb, this is for the XL broadband (20meg);)

http://www.cableforum.co.uk/article/402 (http://www.cableforum.co.uk/board/../../article/402)

I would think this would be ample for you for browsing the internet and doing other things but it would depend on how much you download at the end of the day with things such as torrents etc :)

As Druchii said, if Be is a reasonably fast option i'd go that route. Possibly even 2 lines with a dual-WAN router to make sure everyone's happy.

If not, try get cable business broadband. (http://www.ntltelewestbusiness.co.uk/products__solutions/broadband__internet_services/business_broadband.aspx) I don't think its STMed, although you should confirm that with someone else (like BenMcr). Again, maybe go 2 lines

For either, the cost is higher, but split 6 ways, its not bad.

Business broadband is just about to get STM'd once the 20Mb line comes out, though higher limits and reported to be between 6pm and 11pm (see this thread (http://www.cableforum.co.uk/board/12/33633212-20mb-business-broadband-page-3.html))

Even a ADSL 8Mb will do you as long as no-one in the group starts file sharing/news group downloading, go for a business package from demon or the like if you can't get ADSL2 as thier main business packages do NOT have FUP limits

Yeah, This is why I'm 50/50, torrents and stuff I think will do done over night, I have a WHS server which handles that atm

I know the last inmates hehe had virgin and with ADSL I don't like the idea of waiting 1-3 weeks for it to be setup..

I think you would have a better chance with the virgin broadband as in speed as it depends how far away you are from your exchange for the ADSL and also it would depend if your line can handle speeds such as 24mb as what be ADSL sell:)
