Hi all,

I live in Maidstone and apparently we have now been upgraded to the 10Mb service from 4 Mb.

Trouble is, I'm not seeing any speed increase at all.

I have rebooted my modem several times and for 1 min upwards at a time.

I have downloaded from several fast sites (Apple, Microsoft etc) and I'm getting rougly 450Kbps which is what I was getting before the upgrade. I've tested using a few broadband test web sites and they all tell me im getting 4Mb. There is nothing else running on my network just my laptop with all un-needed apps and services closed except IE7.

Is there any way I can actually tell whether the upgrade has happened, or am I a being stupid (probably).

Any advise would be gratefully recieved.

First things first, ,https://www.cableforum.co.uk/images/local/2008/09/12.gif to the forum.

I'm not to up on the technicalities but can you tell us which modem you have. As this may have a baring on what is happening if your area has been upgraded and you aren't getting any increase in speed.

I have just tracked down the virgin media site where you can check whether your modem is compatible with 10MB.

If you check your modem's config pages, you'll be able to see what speed your modem is currently set for.
Annie's Broadband FAQ (http://abcde.co.uk/virginmedia/broadband-faq.html) has lots of tips and guidance, should you need it.

Thanks for the replies.

I have a Motorola 4100 which the Viginmedia site says is ok to handle 10Mb. I have tried to download a few items from different sites at the same time as suggested by Annies Broadband FAQ and my speeds still add up to roughly 4Mb, I am currently working my way through the FAQ's on that site.

I have checked out my modems config page and this is all it tells me

Frequency Plan: IRCEuropean PAL I/B/G
Upstream Channel ID: 3
Frequency (Hz): 339000000

Many thanks

Hi Phlapp and Jonboy just a thought. I have noticed that occasionally the server you are on is not always the one that you would logically think you would be on. For example on the VM newsgroups one guy living in Coventry was on the Warwick server which explained why he had not received the upgrade he had expected.

You may wish to check your connection (you can do this at the top of this page) before you take any official action with VM.

hi thanks for the quick reply i think i have cured my problem i phoned mv he done a check and said cable modem at fault after running a few tests
when i came off the phone i went into the cable modems settings by typing
http://192.168.100.1/ puts you into motarola setup page reading thru logs a couple of settings had failes so i rebooted modem from within the pagr when it fired up noticed only one failed entry in red i rebooted it another four times and all failed entries went away done a speed check via three different sites all reported nearly 10 meg
the guy at tec is sending me out a new modem but if this holds itd settings over the week end i will be leaving it alone
one thing in the first instance power off all moden router and computer and connect the ntl modem direct to the computer leave the router out untill you have rebooted modem a few times to see if it changes hope this helps others it sorted mine out

Great news Jonboy. Fingers crossed that your fix lasts at least until your new modem arrives. As you say maybe your solution will work for others. :)

I thought all upgrades were due by 31st August 2008? Liverpool and some others are still TBC! This is a joke!

Anyone still waiting for the 10Mb upgrade may also wish to keep an eye on the original, and still open, upgrade thread which can be found here (http://www.cableforum.co.uk/board/12/33627793-virgin-4mb-upgrade-10mb-february-summer.html).

Switched off modem for 2 hours while out.
Then tested without router and getting over 10meg now.
Uninstalled startup script for Tomato firmware and getting over 10meg now with router in circuit.
Great.

Yeah, I'm kinda insulted by the fact that their page hasn't updated since July 31st (despite what it claims) and that now it seems we're looking at the end of this month at least before we're all upgraded.

All VM tell you is if in October you're still not upgraded, call them.

Its a free upgrade, so why complain about it

When a "free upgrade" becomes part of your marketing strategy it's not a "free upgrade" - it's an advertised service offering

:td:

They need to pull their finger out as they have pretty much said their efforts are now geared to their broadband offering - pretty much because they could never rival $ky, but if they are to maintain their position, they really need to up their game (this is before even getting involved with the Phorm and related issues of late)

I really like the upgrade page and there being such specific information. If only there could be a page on the tv side listing tv channels cable doesn't have and particularly HD channels and update it when they are in negociations etc for a channel... fat chance.

On the other hand I can't remember how long ago the 10mb rumours started wrt the middle package, I think they were pre-merger. The 10Mbs seems to have done the rounds and been milked quite a lot. Virgin as a company also want to get a move on because other companies are catching up. Be have been enabled on my exchange as have other LLU operators. There's too much aluminium in the ground round here to ever get anything like 24Mbs on this exchange but that won't be the case for everyone.

I must admit that I have some sympathy with Dave's comments.

IMO. VM are now using the 10Mb as part of their marketing strategy. The 'soon to be upgraded' wording has been dropped from their advertising and whilst they only ever claim that the L package is 'up to 10Mb' those customers still on 4Mb have been left somewhat in limbo.

If VM were a little more forthcoming with information about what is happening then the remaining 4Mb'ers wouldn't feel so frustrated. The upgrade page has been misleading for so long (for example-Baguley being shown as completed well before it was) that being told to keep checking it for updates must feel like a futile exercise. Add being told to phone in if your still not uprated by the end of October and you are bound to have frustrated customers.

This upgrade may well be free but most new customers are being sold 10Mb for the same price that some established customers are paying for 4Mb and to me that does not sit well.

It might not be related but the sooner the 10Mbs gets done the sooner resources and attention are freed up for other pet projects like 50Mbs or the real biggie, analogue switch off.
