View Full Version : Torrents Cause Internet to Stop

I'm on Virgin Media, 10MB/s, Vista SP1, using utorrent 1.8 beta, brand new Dlink 615 + VM router.

Recently, whenever i use torrents, i stay connected, but i cannot connect to the internet (browsing/itunes/IM). If i pause all torrents, then after a few minutes, my connection will start working again.
I can happily download from rapidshare and browse at the same time, so i don't know what the problem is. Someone suggested it may be a TCP/IP problem or a recent vista update that limits the amount of connetions.
Any help welcome.

I would guess you are short of connections, I believe there is a fix floating around the ether to correct vistas stupidity - failing that you need to restrict how many connections your torrent client uses.

have you limited your upload?

There's a technical explanation of Vista's limits on open connections (http://www.mydigitallife.info/2007/04/09/windows-vista-tcpipsys-connection-limit-patch-for-event-id-4226/) and patches for several versions of Vista (http://www.mydigitallife.info/2008/02/17/download-vista-tcpipsys-and-uac-auto-patcher-to-increase-tcp-connection-limit/) -- recommend you read the whole page before starting.

Those having similar problems using XP SP2 will find this technical FAQ (http://www.lvllord.de/?lang=en&url=4226patch/faq) and the XP patch (http://www.lvllord.de/?lang=en&url=downloads) useful.

that's interesting, I wondered why using utorrent in my 2k machine and xp machine the internet would stop working after a while, but using Linux on either using ktorrent i could leave it on for days no problem. I had put it down to utorrent.

Cheers

isn't that limit per application? and then it's only connections that are in the process of being made, not connections that are fully connected

As I understand it, by limiting the number of concurrent open connections, the operating system 'refuses' to open new connections and therefore slows the effective download speed.
From my experience with the same (ID 4226) problem using XP SP2, the limit on connections is independent of the applications running.

the 10 connection limit isn't for opened connections, its for connections being made, totally different

I'm suffering the same thing also, and just for reference, I'm not even using windows, I'm on Ubuntu so the max open connections problem can't apply to me.

I always have Windows Firewall disabled and allow utorrent in KIS. This is not the issue

What colour is the Network Status Light (http://www.utorrent.com/faq.php#What_do_the_Network_Status_lights_mean.3F) showing when you're downloading?
If it stays red, have you tried switching to a different port (and opening it through your firewall/router)?

There are loads of hints and tips to improve your download speed (http://forum.utorrent.com/viewtopic.php?id=15992) on the uTorrent forums.

if uve tried closing windows firewall and still recieve problems, if you have a router do a simple port forwarding. Go on utorrent settings and think of a port number eg 101. Then go on ure wireless router settings and manually open a port designated to 101 for utorrent, and remember specifically that the i.p address is correct, because if ure router is handing out connections to different laptops and pcs. then remember the right i.p adress of that computer u want to use utorrent for.

for example, ive got a pc and a ps3. ure wireless i.p address would end in ***.1 because it is the main connection. if ure pc is plugged in to the 2nd ethernet port then that i.p address would end in ***.2. my ps3 is plugged into the 3rd ethernet port. so the ip address for the ps3 finishes in ***.3

if u want to open the port for the pc, then enter the port 101 for utorrent and enter the right i.p address for pc. u can check which applications are connected to your router by goin on settings and clickin on attached devices, that will give u a list of devices with their right i.p adressses.

hope ive helped, man dat was long, im off too bed ;)

Stays red, tried dozens of different ports, windows firewall disabled, Kasperky Internet Security set to allow utorrent, no router. Tried the various tips and tweaks.

This suddenly started happening a few weeks ago after having been running perfectly fine. I havn't tried it in the last few days.

In uTorrent, go to Options/Speed Guide and click on "Test if port is forwarded properly" -- it'll open your browser and report if you have a firewall problem.

If it reports that your uTorrent port is opened correctly, could you make a note of the Affected Settings listed by the Speed Guide?

I had this problem also, until I changed one setting on uTorrent.

Change the Max Upload to either 1 - 5 kbps this will free up the connection for the internet. If I left it at unlimited upload the connection for web browsing and emails plus anything else, the connection would either just stop or just be intermitent.

Do that while using torrents from a private tracker and you'll needlessly cripple your share ratio! Remember that P2P is about file *sharing*.

Setting your maximum upload rate to 70-80% of your real (connection) upload speed should allow you to browse successfully *and* contribute to the swarm.

Discovered a solution to my problem. Somehow in the advanced options net.bind_IP had become set to a wierd IP. Reset and it seems to be connecting properly again although my browsing is still non existant on most sites with utorrent open.

Pings seem fine.
