hello.
i rent a game server and have done for 5 years but 5 days ago all of a sudden i cannot even see the server or connect to it yet everyone else can, including my brother who is a virgin media broadband customer also on the same ip range as myself who live 4 miles away from me. at 1st i thought "ok firewall problem" so i uninstalled it but still have the same issue. i next thought "gameserver provider" has blocked my ip range but they assure me its not on thier end and also my brother can connect. i next done a traceroute, here it is..

You don't happen to live in belfast? I do and have been expierncing an annoying 5 days with my connection... There is some sites and game servers I can't connect to when I'm using my router.. but when I use a direct connection they just barely work.. I'll connect for abit then get extreme lag followed by being knocked off them. I've tried using every bit of help on these forums but nothing has changed..

It's really bothering me though since it won't let me on one of the games I pay a montly subscription for,So this half-arsed service is making me waste more of my money.

I solved my website problem using the proxy thing but really I just wanna play my games..

It certainly looks like a routing problem, and comparing with your brother's tracert shows the problem is within the VM network. You need to get that across to them somehow, whether that's by calling them again, posting on the virginmedia.support.broadband.cable newsgroup or perhaps having someone here feeding the info to them.

Also changing your IP won't have any effect on your routing.

Can you ask your brother to connect to the game server and do a traceroute back to your computer? I presume you can reach all other sites except your gaming server?

The first 5 (and probably the 6th) hop in your brothers trace are all the ntl network. Your trace suggests a issue in the Belfast core router (since you are apparently not getting past it).

Hmmm my tracert is exactly the same as the one you have..
Bah I'm pathetic with talking to people on phones.. So what did you say to VM anyway? So I can get teh same response. Ooo and a silly question but whats the phone number again?

Exactly why I haven't even tried phoning yet.. Can someone get on to these guys to fix this problem in general?

I had a similar problem recently and ran tracert to the TF2 serever I had probvlems with BBC.co.uk and google.com which both had time outs in the hops. (this has happend several times in the last 6 months)

After phoning retentions, (after trying India to no joy), the helpful person there had said that the call was marked as low priority by India and passed me to 2nd line network support.

The person there got me to try a few tests such as opening cmd window and use netstat. (if you have over 6 connection to outside of your network the problems on your PC, reboot and close all IE windows). He also checked the network as I gave him the addresses of the problem routers from my tracert. ANd he confirmed that the network was ok.

I also tested the connection with the modem connected directly to my PC.

He agreed to send me a new modem as I had a 5 year old one, and he had advised that a more modern modem should help, this appears to have fixed the problem for me.

I've only had my modem for 10months now since I moved in can't see it being the problem.. VMs had it's ups and downs for me.. but stuff was usually sorted within 24hours, This has just got out of hand now with this weirdness lasting five days.

Have you ran netstat to see how many connections are open and what they are ?

Spyware is notorious for hogging bandwidth, so if you do have a lot of open ports to the internet, then run spybot search and destroy as this does a good job of clearing them. http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html

If you do have spyware software already, how often do you run a full scan and update its definitions ?

I know that last week I had about 3 new updates alone for Spybot.
