View Full Version : 20Mb so slow, so called India.

My speeds are garbage, I am in Stockport and rarely get over 2Mb let alone 20Mb, I pay £37 for this crap. I have just spoken to a girl in India, wasnt her fault but she was no help. You can tell she was just reading of a card, in the end she agreed to an engineer. Hes coming Monday, I did tell her it was a bank holiday but she assured me that Virgin Media isnt a bank and will therefore be working. Im running on a NTL 250 Modem wired through a Netgear router they sent me. I have tried the obvious and it must speed up overnight as my torrents are always done by morning, is it just overloaded and if so should they really be charging us for something they cant deliver?

Stockport at the moment for me, although to be fair 3 seconds earlier it was 9 Mbps

Sat, 24 May 2008 12:39:52 UTC

Test 1: 1024K took 422 ms = 2426.5 KB/sec, approx 19994 Kbps, 19.53 Mbps
Test 2: 1024K took 437 ms = 2343.2 KB/sec, approx 19308 Kbps, 18.86 Mbps
Test 3: 1024K took 453 ms = 2260.5 KB/sec, approx 18627 Kbps, 18.19 Mbps
Test 4: 2048K took 1000 ms = 2048 KB/sec, approx 16876 Kbps, 16.48 Mbps

Overall Average Speed = approx 18701 Kbps, 18.27 Mbps

Doesn't really go down to 2Mbps a lot, but it still gives me the impression all is not right in the quality department, obviously when gaming at night this is apparent.

what?
24-05-2008, 18:23
techs do definitely work on bank holidays, so providing shes not made an error in booking it you will get your tech. however, if as is most likely if its okay overnight, it is an issue with overloading there is going to be nothing that tech can do for you the forward it onto the correcdt dept. the agent should have checked for any such issue with teh second line technicians before booking an engineer for you.

i no it was a vm provided router, but have you tried without to see what the speeds are like then?

You shouldn't need to call India. Try going to the Vigin support newsgroup.

virginmedia.support.broadband.cable

You will get live online technical help to try and find out what's causing your problem. They will also book technicians visits for you. They are really pretty good and quick to respond.

Best be quick though as in all VM things they are still NTL at heart and all good ideas that improve the customers service get put on 30 days notice.I am sure I read these guys were on their 30days notice on these forums.. Yes I know they say Phorm will improve your service but that is spying on you to make money so improving their bonuses with later plans fromn phorm to edit content like a newspaper who needs censorship with phorm on your ISP..

Glad to be away and getting my full sped on ADSL

I like the quote on VMs 20mb optimisation web page.

Still experiencing slow speeds?

If you have optimised your PC and are still not receiving full 20Mb speeds, your cable modem might need to be replaced or there may be another issue with your connection.

Please contact Broadband technical support and they will be able to assist you further.

So are they saying we should all receive the full 20mb? not just "up to":)

This link is more for Chicken dippers who seems to think telling the truth is VM bashing but as it says more redundancies.. :upyours:

http://www.cableforum.co.uk/board/12/33632051-more-redundancies.html

Those guys gave the best tech support VM ever had...

So yes I bashed VM but they needed it and until customers do start to bash them it will get worse. All they want is your money each month then to add more from selling your clicks to advertisers via phorm Have Fun. :Peace:

These call centres abroad do say some funny things sometimes... I called Dell at work about a laptop that arrived with a crack in the screen and they asked me to boot it up and into windows to see if the crack was still there??! I also got asked to disconnect a cable on the motherboard of a PC to fix a power button that had got stuck in the chassis!

The guy came round and swapped the modem over for a 256 and its still slow, he seems to think we are over subscribed. I shall wait a month see if it gets any better. I know its pointless complaining as the speed is 'upto' 20 mb.

If your speed is ridiculously under 20mb, eg: say under 5mb complain, VM should give you a discount on your bill. A friend at work had this problem and VM cut his bb-xl bill down to £20pm.

Can I ask where you are getting the results from?

Speedtest websites are shockingly inacurate at times, and use other companys servers and become congested when too many people are trying to use them.

Best thing to do to get the most accurate indication of what Virgin are actually sending down you're line for you to use, is to download directly off their own server and see what speed you get

Try downloading the ZIP file at this address, http://gamefiles.virginmedia.com/blueyondergames/battlefield1942/demo/win32/

Set it to save to you're desktop, dont worry you dont have to download the whole file, just leave it downloading for maybe 10 seconds and see what download speed you get, then cancel the download.

Theres you're most accurate result.

Yes, I tried everything, different computer, rebooting modem and router, connection directly to modem. I did the file download you did and only achieving about 500kps.

I even connect it to the STB BB, (it is still working!!) results are only marginally better. Something is not working in my area.

its best ringing them and getting someone to come round to your house. you really should be getting full speed as they advertise as using optical cables which dont degrade in speed no matter how long the distance.

has it always been slow or has it only started today/?? the thing was i was getting around 7mb for a long time never really knew why and today it suddenly dropped to under 1 mb(tested it on both pc and laptop, but after doing what it says on that link its sorted it out got the full 20mb.

Since last Aug, speed was very bad, I had speeds down to 500kbs at peak times, then in late Feb it all got better and I have 18mb nearly all the time until yesterday. May be its back to the bad old days, then I have no problem leaving VM, I have already got Tiscali on my BT line, I am ready to go any time.

sorry, my last post was not really clear.

You've got to max your connection out, go here http://gamefiles.virginmedia.com/blueyondergames/demos/ and click to save several files (i've noticed internet explorer will only let me download 2 at once, but safari doenst have a limit)

When I've done this, ive totalled up 25meg at its best speeds - over the moon!
