I like that. St David's day is celebrated in a similar way to that around here so it would be nice if we all could that same sort of thing.

We have lots to celebrate in this country - our literature, art, language all of which is globally respected. You and Xaccers are being negative. Enjoy the day, fly the flag, and take from it something which will remind you year round that there are still elements of Englishness which merit a celebration.

Strange comment re "negative" - my reading of this thread is that most posters are positive about it.

Yeah - maybe our politicians will one day grant the English their national day and make it a bank holiday.

I won't, however, be holding my breath for Red Ken to treat Londoners to the same sort of celebration he lays on for St Patrick's Day.

as I read the link, it is up to you to prove that, assuming he took exception to the 'opinion' you have published & pursued it with litigation, so far so theoretical - but are you 100% sure posting such an opinion in a public forum is free from such ????

Yes, and the Left Wingers are also nazi's.

Nazis: a party who actively persecuted people for differing from a percieved ideal german.

Bnp: a party who actively discriminates against (and some members actively persecute) people for differing from a percieved ideal british person.

See the similarity?

In my opinion todays the day we remember and celebrate past English heros, among them the 17th Lancers, which was one of the regiments that took part in the famous Charge of the Light Brigade, this holds a certain significance for me because my great, great, great, great uncle took part in and survived the charge.

Cannon to the right of them,
Cannon to the left of them,
Cannon in front of them, vollyed and thundered,
stormed at with shot and shell, bravely they rode, and well,
into the jaws of death, into the mouth of hell, rode the 600.

Does there need to be that much of a point? St. Patrick's day is just an excuse for a massive **** up isn't it? So is the Dutch national day which is usually on the birthday of the reigning monarch (The present Queen decided to stick to her mother's birthday as it is in a better season, weather wise).
There's some formal stuff to the day, like the Queen visiting places and interacting with the public. Other than that, it's just a day of festivities. Loads of entertainment is laid on for children, city centres are transformed into massive car boot sales, many people dress in orange, bakers will sell orange pastry etc., there's live gigs and people get ****ed (in a generally laid back atmosphere). It's a massive party. Who cares about a reason when you can have a nationwide party?

Not me :)

I think all the Patron Saint days of the UK's home nations should be public holidays, for each particular country.

Especially as, AFAIK, N. Ireland already has Saint Patrick's Day as a public holiday.

Oh, also saw on the news that Saint George's Cross was flown above no.10 Downing Street on Wednesday for the first time on a Saint George's Day. The Welsh & Scottish flags are also going to be flown above no.10 on their respective days.
