Hi guys

I was wondering if anyone could offer me some advice with my father’s broadband connection.

He has been with NTL/Virgin Media for at least 7 years. He still has the original NTL;home 200 Internet modem. His PC is about 5 years old and the spec is an AMD Athlon (tm) XP2000+ 166 GHZ 480 MB ram. The internal Modem is a Modem Intel (R) 536ep V.92. He is using Windows XP V2002. He lives in the OX14 area.

He has had mega problems with the speed of his internet connection. ( he swears it slowed down when Virgin Media took over, but I don’t think this is the case). He was receiving only 2meg until about 8 weeks ago. I called Virgin Media who very kindly gave him a free 4meg upgrade. The upgrade appears to have made no difference. The internet is still running very slow, for example he cannot watch anything on You Tube has even the smallest file takes ages to download.

I ran the test Dan Elwells Speed Test website which was recommended by the guys at Virgin Media. The results are as follows:

UK Servers: Lower then 30ms the better - I got 37,32,30
European Servers: Lower then 50ms the better – I got 59,62,39,67
East Coast: Lower then 120ms the better- I got 163, 111,185,103
West Coast: Lower then 160 the better I got 213,179,188,162
Asia: Lower then 300 the better – I got 342,359,446!
The results also told me that a small amount of packets were lost to Europe and the USA

I have a feeling it’s his PC or the NTL Modem. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Regards
Mark

A slow computer ie his can have dramatic influences on the internet. ie a slow computer can bring the internet down to the computers level.

I believe its time for an upgrade. Check here (http://www.cclonline.com/).

If upgrading is not an option, i suggest he gets the computer tweakd, and also, runs some anti virus, malware, anti spyware, adware scans using these programs:

adaware se, spybot s&d, a-squared free and also run ccleaner to speed up the pc.

Have you checked the modem pages to see if the 'Bit Rate' has been changed to 4000000 Bit/sec?
Unsure how to get to modem pages on the NTL home 200, try
http://192.168.100.1/ it might work

+ try rebooting the modem and retesting.

All NTL modems have the Username" root" and Password "root" to access the configuration pages.

try this link.

If you are going to run the TCP Optimizer on the above link, set the Kbps slider to 4000 Kbps for your 4Meg connection (thats if you have checked the modem bit rate has been changed by VM, if not set at 2000 Kbps for 2Meg and then ring Virgin and ask why it hasn't been upgraded)

That PC will still manage a 100Mb LAN link transferring files and pages internally very happily. So an upgrade is not necessary, however, a quick run of ccleaner from www.ccleaner.com (http://www.ccleaner.com) along with your checks could do the world of good.

What model of modem does this chap have?

Sorry for the delay guys.

We are having problems downloading the speed test. The software starts to load and then hangs when it gets to about 5 bars. We have tried it a number of times at different times of the day but we get the same problem. ( The speed test does work fine on both my own PCs however). We have used Ccleaner and the TCP Optimzer. There does not appear to be much change in the performance of the PC and the internet is still very slow.
