HI,

Just a quickie, what sort of retention do you get on news.virginmedia.com?

Many thanks!

Seems ok to me, does this include binaries?

Binaries can be OK sometimes, but more often than not there are loads of incomplete files. You are better off paying the extra and going to a premium ISP like Easynews www.easynews.com. Others will chip in with their favourite ISP no doubt. :)

I tend to download relatively 'new' binaries (stuff posted within the last few days) and have noticed that since the switch to news.virginmedia.com, I've not had to use my backup news provider once. It suggests to me that retention is much better than previously.

However, there are loads of teething problems with the new server (eg. slow header downloads, missing articles, fast timeouts) so it's probably best to give it a week for VM to sort them out.

the new news server news.virginmedia.com is actually provided from www.newshosting.com but with a 7day limit so retention is excellent.

I think you mean Highwinds Network Group (http://www.highwinds.com/pr12.html).
A traceroute to news.virginmedia.com resolves to an 'hwng' server in Amsterdam.

Indeed, look here for the newshosting ip address http://samspade.org/whois/69.16.163.11 - owned by highwinds.
