YOu can do all the tests you like you aint gonna get a true reading. In fact I only get decent speeds when dl from newsgroups that i pay for!

yes, sign up for an account with Giganews, you can be fairly sure that download speeds from the european server, using the standard 10 connections, are a good indicator of your connection speed ....

Even better, use the VM newsgroups for free!
(I generally get very good speeds even though they're hosted in Holland.)

If you've not used newsgroups for downloading before, have a read of Slyck's excellent Guide to the Newsgroups (http://www.slyck.com/ng.php).
Make sure you read the bits about nzb files -- they make downloading easy!
And they're very easy (http://nzbmatrix.com) to find...

The method that VM Tech Support recommend is four simultaneous downloads: two from the VM demo games server (http://gamefiles.virginmedia.com/blueyondergames/demos/) plus two from Zen's test files (http://fuller.zen.co.uk/test). That's four file downloads happening at once!
Then add up each of the four download speeds to get your accurate download rate.
