Hey guys i thought this website through google. u guys seem like a nice bunch =]

Ok so i have an NTL200. iv been with virgin for 2 years or so now. no problems at all. in the last 3 weeks iv been playing games etc. doing anything. using VoIP program's such as Ventrillo, teamspeak. etc. have been making my ping/latency jump up to 999ms . with an average of 30ms on UK servers. and 100+ in USA.

i even tried dropping the codec in ventrillo. this doesnt really help. even if it did. i should have to do that. surely my internet can handle using ventrillo??

iv never had this problem. i SHOULDNT be getting this. i have no idea what is causing this. i have all programs closed Limewire = off. xfire = off MSN = off
just ventrillo and a game. its in any game. and it isnt just the server for the game its my whole connection.

I also share with my sister. who just uses msn. and firefox. normal stuff.

So please cable forum, help me if u know what to do, im willing to try everything

Hi Ozzy121 and welcome to the Forum

I don't think that there is anything you can do, people may well come on here and ask you to post your modem settings, disconnect your router, reboot your modem and all that jazz. If its been fine and just recently gone to pot I would say unless something drastic happened with your setup then it is the VM network.

I'm on so called 20 meg which to be fair if I was measuring download speed only then it can get up to 19 :-

Test 1: 1024K took 437 ms = 2343.2 KB/sec, approx 19308 Kbps, 18.86 Mbps
Test 2: 1024K took 422 ms = 2426.5 KB/sec, approx 19994 Kbps, 19.53 Mbps
Test 3: 1024K took 422 ms = 2426.5 KB/sec, approx 19994 Kbps, 19.53 Mbps
Test 4: 2048K took 859 ms = 2384.2 KB/sec, approx 19646 Kbps, 19.19 Mbps
Overall Average Speed = approx 19736 Kbps, 19.28 Mbps

That was yesterday morning so there is nothing wrong with my setup I would say.

Nevertheless come Sunday night at 10 pm I was kicked from 2 servers due to high ping, and I mean high, up to 800 - 900 at times. That is diabolical and unplayable even at 180 which is about 10 times my normal ping, that says to me the network can't cope.

Now then all this may be down to me as one lad upstairs is on Half Life and the other on browsing, Vent and Xfire, I would like to think that this would not saturate my connection. Sometimes it's ok others it's not.

I'm seriously thinking of having an ADSL connection just for myself if things don't pick up come the Summer hols.

trace route to the server you are getting high pings from it might not be VM thats causing it, might be high loads on routers off their network

I have been looking at routers recently (specifically those that do NAS) and found that Acer do some that willl allow you to do traffic mangement i.e. set aside a certain amount of bandwidth for voip, gaming, browsing etc, which may be useful for this kind of problem. They also have them with bittorrent clients that will download stuff while you pc is off - ideal for overnight downloads and avoiding STM.
